Search is on for lost cat at JFK's Terminal 4

14 hrs.

Remember Jack the Cat?

The former stray made headlines and more than 24,000 Facebook friends?last year after escaping from a pet carrier in Terminal 4 at New York?s John F.?Kennedy International?Airport that was bound for an American Airlines flight to California. Two months later, Jack fell through a ceiling panel in a customs area in JFK?s Terminal 8. But by then he was so ill that, despite extensive veterinary care, he was euthanized 12 days later.

Now another cat has escaped at JFK, and the cat lovers at Where is Jack, Inc. --?the non-profit formed to honor?Jack?s legacy -- are concerned that neither the airline involved,?China Airlines,?nor officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey?are actively searching for the pet or giving her owners adequate information.?

On Thursday, four-year old Xiaohwa (the cat?s name means "little flower" in Chinese) was being checked in for China Airlines Flight 19 to Taiwan by a friend bringing the cat to its owner. But Xiaohwa bolted when the traveler removed her so security officers could inspect the pet carrier.

"We called Terminal 4 to ask people to look around," a China Airlines employee told NBC News after the passenger reported the cat had escaped. "That's all we could do," the spokesperson said, as the passenger didn't have a picture of the animal.

Xiaohwa has been missing since Thursday. Her owner, Iris Yu, says she?s having a hard time finding out what is being done to find her pet.

?I am so worried and wondering where she is,? Yu told NBC News from her home in Taiwan. ?I have been calling the Port?Authority?and the airline every day trying to ask for details about the search, but they just tell me to wait.? Yu moved to Taiwan 10 months ago and paid $120 for a ticket for the cat to travel with her friend as excess baggage. She spent hundreds of?dollars more for documents, health exams and other travel preparations for the cat.

Yu?s boyfriend, Jerry Cheung, lives in Brooklyn and has also been trying to get information about the cat?s whereabouts.??After the incident we were told it?s the airline?s responsibility but the airline?s phone just kept on ringing with no answer for several days,? he said.

The Port Authority told Cheung it would put out some small animal traps with food and "wait it out."

?This is what they did with Jack and it didn?t work,? said Mary Beth Melchior, founder of Where is Jack, Inc., which has offered the airport help for active searches of lost pets. ?Passive searches for lost cats rarely, if ever, result in finding the animal in a timely manner that allows the animal to remain healthy,? she told NBC News.

Although Xiaohwa has a microchip and has a history of being street savvy, she may have already used several of her nine lives. Yu and Chueng adopted the cat after seeing and feeding her for two years on the streets in their neighborhood. They took her in when she was sick and pregnant and nursed her back to health despite a veterinarian?s suggestion that the animal be euthanized.

In September, the Port Authority approved plans for construction of a $32 animal handling facility at JFK that will handle up to 70,000 domestic and wild animals annually and ?set new national airport standards for comprehensive veterinary, kenneling and quarantine services.?

We Eat Less Sugar But Too Much FatYour Health Journal | Your ...

From The Wanganui Chronicle?..

Wanganui residents have cut down their sugar intake but still indulge in high-calorie foods like fish and chips, a community dietitian says.

Pushpa Wati of the Regional Primary Health Organisation, who sees many people who are obese, said residents needed to be more careful about their diets.

?Most obese patients have either developed diabetes or high blood pressure or are about to develop these conditions.

?For some, their children are also obese,? she said.

New Zealand?s obesity rates reached infamous levels last week when the Government beat out its transtasman counterpart to win a Couch Potato Award.

The Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society accolade recognised weak leadership in tackling the obesity epidemic.

About one in three New Zealand adults is overweight and one in four obese, according to a New Zealand Adult Nutrition survey.

Obesity rates have nearly tripled in recent decades. In 1977, only 9 per cent of males and 11 per cent of females were obese.

?In Wanganui, most people are being careful about the amount of sugar they add into their tea or coffee, but they consume a lot more calories through cream, butter, full cream milk, cheese, fried foods [and] fast foods,? Mrs Wati said.

Diabetes New Zealand was not surprised by the Obesity Society award. ?The worst thing [the Government] did ? was they abandoned the rule that had been implemented ? that demanded school tuckshops and canteens only had available healthy food for sale,? president Chris Baty said.

Obesity rates for children aged two to 14 years show one in 12 is obese and one in five is overweight.

Mrs Baty said obesity was often a significant contributing factor in type two diabetes ? a disease the Ministry of Health estimates affects more than 200,000 New Zealanders. ?There?s a massive increase in diabetes. It certainly is linked with the increase in obesity, but it?s not the only reason.

?It?s also to do with our ageing population [and] we know that diabetes has a predisposition within Maori and Pacific Island people.?

The Q-53 Radar Finds Enemy Firing Positions Before Their Mortars Find Us

Fighting wars would be a hell of a lot easier if everybody still just lined up on the field of battle where we can see them. But with the advent of guerilla tactics and asymmetric warfare, you now need to keep your head on a swivel in a vicious cockfight—or just let Lockheed Martin's new mobile radar system watch your back. Clevelanders Can Reserve a Microsoft Surface By Snagging a Reservation Card at Beachwood Place

If you were hoping to snag a new Microsoft Surface tablet on launch day, Friday, and did not pre-order it online, you're still in luck. All Microsoft stores in the United States are handing out Surface reservation cards in limited quantities, and that includes the not-yet-open pop-up shops, including the one at Beachwood Place in Cleveland.

I stopped in at Beachwood Place this afternoon to scope things out. I parked between Dilliard's and Saks Fifth Avenue because I had already looked up the Microsoft Store's location on the mall's website - it's located in the E zone of the mall near Fannie May Chocolates and the escalators that take you up to the second floor. I really had no interest in going anywhere else in the mall, so that was the closest entrance.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but my eagle-eyed three-year-old was the first to spot the kiosk. I had told him we were looking for the Microsoft stand, and he spotted it before me, no doubt attracted by the bright, colorful Microsoft logo. Sadly, it's only a kiosk and not a full-size store, but it's a start. Perhaps if the kiosk is successful, Microsoft will consider opening up a permanent store in the Cleveland area.

There were a few Microsoft employees at the stand when I stopped by, and it looked like they were conducting some kind of training and were getting things ready for launch day later this week. Half of them were sporting black t-shirts with the slogan "I'm a PC".

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was a stack of reservation cards about one-inch thick. Each card is numbered in the bottom right-hand corner. Consumers are allowed to take up to two reservation cards each. I'm guessing that there are somewhere in the range of 100 total. If you want one, just stop by the kiosk and ask one of the helpful employees. They're only giving out a limited number, so get on down there sooner rather than later.

The reservation card guarantees that you will get a Surface on launch day, but there is a catch: you have to get there by 12pm. If you come later, you'll have to get in line and hope there are some left. I like the idea of the reservation cards because then you're not forced to stand in line like a herd of sheep all day ? la Apple product launches. Plus, you're not putting out any money like in a pre-order. When you pick up a reservation card, they do ask which model you're interested in and write it down for tracking purposes, but you're not locked into a decision and can change your mind when you go to pick it up.

We'll be there for the grand opening of the kiosk on Friday, and the launch of the Microsoft Surface tablet, so check back in then for our thoughts on the Surface.

National Space Society + New Mexico Museum Of Space History... Space Advocacy History Preservation... (Event)

[SatNews] The National Space Society (NSS) and the New Mexico Museum of Space History (NMMSH) announced a new partnership...

...for the establishment of a permanent home for historic records chronicling the development of the space activist community and the U.S. space industry. This alliance is the result of four years of discussions and negotiations about the disposition of the Society's archives (which go back as far as the mid-1970's when Wernher von Braun founded the National Space Institute, a predecessor of the NSS) and will officially enable the Museum to begin accepting materials from the Society.

Dale Amon, Chairman of NSS's Archives Committee and a member of the NSS Board of Directors, announced the new partnership at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS). Amon said, "If we do not save our history, it will be rewritten by others. It is up to us, the founders of the Space Movement and dedicated advocates of the space industry, to make sure there is an unambiguous record of how the future came to be and the huge role we played in it."

"It is a rare privilege to have our Museum chosen to conserve and protect the National Space Society Collection. Current and future historians will find that this Collection provides an uncommon insight into the hearts and minds of the activists who founded what is known today as the commercial space industry," said Chris Orwoll, Executive Director of NMMSH. "The Museum's partnership with the National Space Society will ensure that this Collection, reflecting decades of dedication to opening space for all, will be preserved to provide understanding and education for future generations."

New Mexico's Spaceport America, the first commercial spaceport in history, is a major outcome of decades of work by space advocates at the NSS and other like-minded citizens. The Museum project will not only detail that past effort, but document and preserve the evolution of space travel in the exciting years to come.
