SAfrica: Mandela remains critical as family feuds

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Nelson Mandela's grandson says he will contest a court order for him to move the remains of three family members to their original gravesite.

The family feud comes as Mandela, 94, remains in critical condition Sunday in a Pretoria hospital.

The grandson, Mandla Mandela, issued a statement Sunday saying he was compelled to take action against 16 other family members who had pressed the case.

The court orders that the remains of Nelson Mandela's three deceased children should be moved back to the family gravesite in Qunu from the nearby village of Mvezo, according to South Africa's Sunday Times newspaper.

The Mandela family feud over the gravesite is apparently a prelude to a disagreement over where Nelson Mandela's remains will stay.

Both sides expressed regret over the public case.

Biden asks Ecuador president to nix Snowden asylum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden has asked Ecuador to turn down an asylum request from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, the country's president said Saturday.

Rafael Correa, in a weekly television address, offered little sympathy for the Obama administration's view that Snowden is a criminal who should be swiftly returned to the U.S. At the same time, he vowed to seek American input on any asylum request and suggested Snowden will have to answer for his actions.

The Friday phone call between Correa and Biden ? it's the highest-level conversation between the U.S. and Ecuador to be disclosed since Snowden began seeking asylum ? added to the confusion about Snowden's status. Facing espionage charges in the U.S., Snowden is believed to be holed up in a Moscow airport's transit zone and seeking safe passage to Ecuador, the country seen as likeliest to shelter America's most wanted fugitive.

Julian Assange, founder of the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, has been given asylum in Ecuador's embassy in London.

Correa said he had a "friendly and very cordial" conversation with Biden, and told the vice president that Ecuador hadn't sought to be put in the situation of deciding whether to harbor an American justice-dodger. He said Ecuador can't consider the asylum request until Snowden is on Ecuadorean soil.

"The moment that he arrives, if he arrives, the first thing is we'll ask the opinion of the United States, as we did in the Assange case with England," Correa said. "But the decision is ours to make."

White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan confirmed that the two leaders spoke by phone Friday and discussed Snowden, but she wouldn't disclose any details about the conversation.

A staunch critic of the U.S., Correa rebuked the Obama administration for hypocrisy, invoking the case of brothers Roberto and William Isaias, bankers whose extradition from the U.S. Correa said Ecuador has been seeking. "Let's be consistent. Have rules for everyone, because that is a clear double-standard here," he said.

The leftist leader sought to direct attention away from Snowden's actions and back to the U.S. spying secrets he exposed, summoning a theme he's invoked to the delight of his strongest backers since Snowden, a former NSA contractor, revealed the agency's massive Internet and phone surveillance to two newspapers, fleeing all the while from Hong Kong to Moscow in evasion of U.S. authorities.

"The really grave thing is what Snowden has reported," Correa said. "He will have to assume his responsibilities, but the grave thing is his reporting of the biggest massive spy operation in the history of humanity, inside and outside the United States."

Ecuadorean officials have acknowledged its embassy in London issued Snowden a letter of safe passage that calls on other countries to allow him to travel to asylum in Ecuador. But Ecuador's secretary of political management, Betty Tola, said the letter was invalid because it was issued without central government approval in Quito, the capital.

Obama and his aides have tempered their rhetoric about Snowden in recent days after more heated attempts to pressure China and Russia over his extradition raised tensions with those nations, threatening to undercut cooperation with the two major powers on other issues.

But Ecuador has seemed to delight in tweaking the U.S. over the issue, accusing America of human rights violations and blowing off warnings about how the U.S. might respond if Ecuador doesn't cooperate.

After the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., on Wednesday threatened an effort to block renewal of Ecuador's tariff benefits on hundreds of millions of dollars in trade, Ecuador preemptively renounced the benefits themselves, claiming the trade deal had become "a new instrument of blackmail."

As for Biden, Correa suggested it wasn't personal. He praised the vice president for being more courteous than "those badly behaved and confused ones in the Senate who threaten our country."

The galaxy will be your plaything in turn-based space RPG Starborn Wanderers

Russian publisher Game Insight is well known for its casual titles such as My Country and Mystery Manor.

With newly announced game Starborn Wanderers, it's looking to do something more midcore, however.

A turn-based space RPG taking inspiration from the likes of Elite or Privateer, it's a single-player free-to-play experience.

You create your character, buy your first ship and then head into the galaxies to trade, mine, and fight your way to success.

Flexibility is provided as you can work your way through the missions or just free-roam.

Big in the hanger

Of course, different ships will be required for different missions and there will be plenty of customisation options in terms of the equipment, hardpoints and weaponry you select.

Being free-to-play, you'll be able to buy single use items such as shield for additional defence, as well as fuel to speed your travel.

Your character's attributes in terms of their pyro, tele or electro-kinesis skills will also provide useful as you level them up.

Currently just announced for iPad, but expected for other devices too, Starborn Wanderers is due for release later in 2013.

US checking reports of American killed in Egyptian protests

Opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi burn a Freedom and Justice Party office Friday in Alexandria, Egypt.

By M. Alex Johnson and Jeff Black, NBC News

A U.S. citizen was killed on Friday in Alexandria, Egypt, site of anti-government protests, a State Department official told NBC News.

?We can confirm that a U.S. citizen was killed in Alexandria, Egypt,? the official said. ?We are providing appropriate consular assistance from our Embassy in Cairo and our Bureau of Consular Affairs at the State Department. ?We do not have further information to provide at this time."

Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, said 21-year-old student Andrew Pochter of Chevy Chase, Md., was killed in Alexandria.

In a statement, the school said Pochter was an intern at AMIDEAST, a nonprofit group not affiliated with Kenyon that is engaged in international education, training and development.

Al Jazeera and Reuters, both quoting doctors and Egyptian security officials, and the Egyptian state news agency MENA reported Friday that the man died from a stab wound to the chest in Alexandria.

Officials at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo told NBC News that they were investigating the reports but hadn't been able to confirm them.

Gen. Amin Ezzeddin, a senior security official in Alexandria, told Reuters that the American was using a mobile phone camera near an office of President Mohammed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood as it was being attacked by protesters. The man died at a military hospital, Ezzeddin said.

At least 80 other people have been wounded in the Alexandria protests, MENA reported.

The protests are part of the buildup to nationwide "June 30" demonstrations marking a year since Morsi's election. Morsis opponents hope to force early presidential elections, citing a range of social and economic issues.

Morsi's supporters have promised that they will also take to the streets to defend the Muslim Brotherhood-backed government.

"There are no services. We can't find diesel or gasoline," Mohamed Abdel Latif, an accountant, told Reuters. "We elected Morsi, but this is enough."

Charlene Gubash of NBC News contributed to this report from Cairo, Egypt.

Senegal president asks Obama for more help against Islamists

By Daniel Flynn

DAKAR (Reuters) - Senegalese President Macky Sall said on Friday he had asked U.S. President Barack Obama to provide more help to African nations fighting an Islamist threat in the Sahara, particularly in the sphere of military training, hardware and intelligence.

Sall, who held talks with Obama in Dakar on Thursday on the first leg of a three-nation African tour, said they had discussed the menace from al Qaeda-linked groups in the vast and lawless desert region, which runs east to west across Africa.

Senegal borders Mali, where armed Islamists seized control of the country's north last year. France launched a military campaign in January to oust the jihadists - warning that their enclave was a threat to the West - but groups of fighters have regathered in the deserts of south Libya and north Niger.

"We need in Africa, not just in Senegal but the whole of Africa, to have the military capacity to solve this problem but we need training, we need materials, we need intelligence," Sall told Reuters in an interview.

The United States, as well as the European Union and France, had a crucial role to play in helping African countries overcome a lack of military capacity and resources, Sall said. The Islamists had armed themselves with weapons looted from the stocks of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi after he was toppled in 2011.

"We need our friends to cooperate with us to help build those capacities and I think President Obama understands that terrorism since September 11 moves around the world," he said. "It is a global action and I think he's ready to work in that way."

The United States has already stationed surveillance drones and sent military trainers to Niger to prepare African troops which will form part of a 12,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali, due to start on July 1.

Washington had for many years conducted counter-terrorism training in Mali but military cooperation was halted by a March 2012 coup in Bamako, prompted by a northern uprising by Islamists and Tuareg separatists.

Sall said both he and Obama agreed it was essential for planned presidential elections in Mali to go ahead on July 28, despite reservations from some advocacy groups, in order to complete a transition back to democracy.

Some rights groups have said Mali will not be ready to hold the ballot and have called for it to be postponed, warning that a botched vote could jeopardize the legitimacy of a new government charged with ending ethnic and religious tensions.

"We think, and we discussed this, that on July 28 the Malians should hold presidential elections. I think we can really do it," said Sall, whose country has sent troops to take part in the U.N. mission.

TIME TO BUILD BETTER RELATIONS

Sall voiced confidence Obama intended to devote more attention to Africa after a first term spent dealing with the global financial crisis and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Many Africans have seen their initial enthusiasm over America's first black president turn to disappointment after he visited the continent only once during his first term: a one-day stopover in Ghana shortly after taking office in 2009.

"Today it's his second term and the time has come for him to build better the relation between the USA and Africa," Sall said.

"Africa is a place where you can invest and get back your investment very easily ... His visit to Africa will facilitate American investment in the continent."

Sall said U.S. companies were interested in investing in Senegal in the energy sector and infrastructure projects, like toll roads and railways. Senegal was seeking joint-ventures with U.S. firms to add value, particularly in agriculture where local companies needed help to meet U.S. sanitary standards.

Inbee Park leads US Women's Open after 3 rounds

(AP) ? Inbee Park was mad, even if it didn't show in her always placid demeanor.

She had made bogey, her third straight, on a hole she thought she should have birdied, and the world's top-ranked player was looking a bit shaky.

Time for a clutch putt.

Park is now one round away from history, leading the U.S. Women's Open by four strokes. She shot 1-under 71 on Saturday in harsh conditions at Sebonack and was 10 under for the tournament.

Fellow South Korean I.K. Kim had a 73 to remain in second but lost two strokes to Park. With the wind whipping, the course set up long and the pin placements tricky, Park was the only player to shoot under par in the third round.

No one has ever won the first three majors in a year when there were at least four.

"I'm just going to try to do the same thing that I did for the last three days," Park said. "Yeah, it will be a big day. But it's just a round of golf, and I just try not to think about it so much."

She wasn't too disappointed by her bogeys on the 11th and 12th; those were tough holes. But on the par-5 13th, her chip on her third shot rolled into the bunker when it should have put her in position for a birdie putt.

She still led by three strokes but appeared vulnerable ? at least by her recently lofty standards.

"That bogey was a bad bogey," Park said, "so after that I really got my concentration going."

She was unlucky then lucky on the par-4 14th. She thought her second shot would be pushed back by the wind, but it carried too far and settled on the ridge above the hole. No worries: Park simply holed a 30-foot, downhill putt for birdie.

"That was a big putt for me," she said. "Those three bogeys were very tough to handle in the kind of situation that I was in."

A hole later, she made a 15-foot birdie putt.

It looked as though nobody would break par for the day until she birdied No. 18. Only five players were under par for the tournament.

England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff (74) was third at 3 under. She had to play 21 holes Saturday after the second round was suspended the night before because of fog. Park had good timing Friday: Her group was on the 18th fairway when the horn sounded, so she was able to finish off her round and rest up for the weekend.

Not a morning person, Ewart Shadoff didn't enjoy waking up at 4:30 a.m. She birdied the 18th hole to earn a spot in the final group with Park and Kim, then took a nap in the four-plus hours between rounds.

Ewart Shadoff had a chance to make things interesting on No. 12 with Park on the way to a bogey. But her long birdie putt slid over the hole, and she missed the par putt. Instead of pulling within two strokes of Park, Ewart Shadoff remained four back.

Then she bogeyed two of the last three holes.

Kim had a double bogey on No. 3 to fall back. She played 1 under the rest of the way, but that one bad hole allowed Park to put some distance between them.

"She is playing great. But you never know, I might have a great day tomorrow," Kim said. "So golf is a different thing than other sports. That's why you play four rounds."

If Park shoots even-par or better Sunday, it will be just the fourth time the U.S. Women's Open was won with a score in double digits below par.

No wonder Brittany Lincicome joked to reporters, "I think Inbee's playing a different golf course, which you guys are unaware of yet."

Certainly feels that way.

With Park again on a different plane from the rest of the field, the biggest excitement Saturday might have come when Jessica Korda fired her caddie after nine holes and replaced him with her boyfriend.

The switch seemed to work: After shooting 5 over on the front nine, Korda was 1 under the rest of the way. She finished with a 76 and was tied for sixth at 1 over, 11 strokes behind Park.

The 2008 U.S. Women's Open champion, Park has already won five times this year, including her last two tournaments.

"I'm just going to think that I.K. and I am tied starting in tomorrow's play because anything can happen out here," she said. "I mean, four shots, it could be nothing around this golf course. So I just have to keep pushing myself to make pars. I think par is going to be good enough tomorrow, but I'm just going to try to do my best. A lot of thinking going on, a lot of pressure.

"But I've done that before, so I think the experience is going to help me going through it tomorrow."

Young Imbeciles Destroy Largest Lego Helicopter Ever

Yesterday a group of idiotic teens destroyed the largest Lego helicopter in the world, the 100,000-piece Erickson Air-Crane. Built by Ryan McNaught over the course of six weeks, the pieces alone are valued at $25,000.

The massive 13-foot-long (4 meters), 3.2-foot-tall (1 meter) model was on display at Cairns Central Shopping Centre in Cairns, Australia, when a group of stupid youngsters approached it and deliberately pushed it from its display. They fled right after the helicopter crashed, spreading most of its pieces over the mall's floor. The police are now examining the CCTV footage to determine the identity of these vandals, may they end in a hell in which every time they walk they step barefoot onto the sharpest Lego bricks in the universe.

Talking to Cairns.com.au, McNaught said: "I was disappointed that my six weeks' worth of work was not going to be able to be appreciated by the community but more so I was upset for the kids."

Weekend Stargazing: Celestial Scorpion Reigns in Night Sky

There's a giant scorpion hovering overhead, but have no fear. This creepy crawler is actually the constellation Scorpius. It's all sparkle and no sting.

In his book "The Stars in Our Heaven ? Myths and Fables," (Pantheon Books, 1948) author Peter Lum writes: "The scorpion is essentially a creature of darkness, a furtive little animal that lurks in the shadows, hides under stones or in any dark crevice and cannot bear to face the light ? only at night does it come out in search of its prey. Although seldom fatal (its sting) is extremely painful; hence the scorpion is usually disliked, feared and avoided by anyone who has ever come in contact with him."

But so far as stargazing is concerned, it's a whole different story, as Lum is quick to point out:

"The scorpion may be an insignificant and ugly little beast, but the stars that bear its name form one of the most beautiful and conspicuous constellations in the sky. What is more remarkable is that it looks like a scorpion. At least it looks like some creature with a long and curving tail, or like a ? great fish hook." [Amazing Night Sky Photos: June 2013]

And if you face due south at around 11 p.m. local time this week, you may be able to get the best view of this magnificent star pattern ? the constellation Scorpius ? which ironically represents a lowly, creepy-crawly thing that has few friends.

Scorpius is a constellation that can be best appreciated by southerners. Those who live in the far-northern United States, southern Canada or the British Isles will have part or even all of its tail hidden below the southern horizon. As one progresses farther south, the Scorpion slowly climbs the southern sky.? For those who live in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, northern Argentina, Uruguay, most of Brazil, northern Chile and southern Peru Scorpius lies directly overhead. The Milky Way Galaxy passes through the lower extremities of the Scorpion.? Here clouds of stars and dark interstellar dust combine in a bewildering array as seen in binoculars andamateur telescopes.?

The Scorpion's brightest star is the first-magnitude Antares, displaying a reddish hue. To the ancients, this distinctive red color suggested the planet Mars and the name Antares means literally "The Rival of Ares," Ares being the Greek name for the God of War. I've always felt that even on those occasions when Mars outshines Antares, it still rivals Mars in terms of its fiery color. The so-called Red Planet actually glows with an orange-yellow luster, whereas the star Antares always glows with ruddy hue. In the time of Confucius, Chinese astronomers called this star Ta Who, 'The Great Fire."

Antares is a cool, red supergiant star, about 604 light-years away. It is 9,000 times more luminous and about 700 times the diameter of our sun. If our solar system were centered on Antares, the orbit of the Earth would easily fit inside the star. Put another way, if we could reduce our sun down to the size of a baseball, Antares would be a globe measuring more than 134 feet (nearly 41 meters) in diameter!

Yet, despite these impressive statistics, it should be noted that the overall density of Antares is less than one-millionth that of the sun. Antares is also relatively cool as stars go, only about 6,500 degrees Fahrenheit (3,593 degrees Celsius) compared to 11,000 degrees F (6,093 degrees C) for the sun. The star's low temperature accounts for its ruddy color.

Antares also has a small, very hot companion, bluish-white in color, but yet has been described appearing as "?? a little spark of glittering emerald" because of its proximity and contrast to ruddy Antares. The two stars orbit each other over a span of nearly 900 years, separated by a distance of about 500 times Earth?s distance from the sun.??

Of all the constellations, only Orion can boast more bright stars than Scorpius. And indeed, there were mythological reasons for the scorpion's placement in our summer sky. The most famous legend has Scorpius representing the creature that stung Orion, the Mighty Hunter to death. To honor Orion, the Scorpion was placed opposite him in the sky, so that these celestial antagonists will never meet again.? And supposedly that's why when Orion is disappearing below the western horizon during spring evenings, the Scorpion is beginning to poke his head up in the southeast.?

1,000 Jobs: Chevron, Unions sign PLA for Richmond Refinery Modernization

In a far-reaching agreement that will reduce emissions in the community and create up to 1,000 union jobs, Chevron (NYSE:CVX) and the Contra Costa Building and Construction Traces Council, have settled on a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) for Chevron?s Richmond Refinery Modernization Project. The pact outlines basic terms of how jobs will be filled for the Project. The City of Richmond is expected to be release its Environmental Impact Report early 2014, with final approval anticipated in late 2014.

According to a joint announcement, ?By updating and replacing older equipment with new technologies, the project will make the refinery inherently safer and achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions without changing the basic function of the refinery. In addition, the Modernization Project will ensure the refinery continues to drive economic growth in Richmond through the continued production of motor and jet fuels, and lubricant products.?

?The Modernization Project will create a newer, cleaner and safer refinery that is better for the community,? said Kory Judd, General Manager of the Richmond Refinery. ?We look forward to partnering with labor to move the project forward in an open and transparent permitting process.?

Rivera said. ?Why aren?t they mentoring these young men who are fatherless, many of them ? Ray Lewis and all of the rest. Michael Vick. Uh, you can count them. There?s a ton of them. They sign them because they?re superb athletes and do nothing to preserve their character and put them on the right road toward manhood. It?s really pathetic.?

Rivera gets a few things wrong here: Hernandez isn?t from the inner city, he?s from a middle-class subdivision in Bristol, Connecticut. Hernandez?s father died when he was 16, but it?s wrong to call him ?fatherless,? as Hernandez often spoke about the close relationship he had with his father. Also, Hernandez?s agent didn?t get ?10 percent of $40 million,? as NFL agents can get a maximum of 3 percent of a player?s income, and $40 million represents the total value of the contract Hernandez signed last year ? most of which he will never see.

And, of course, the NFL does do plenty to try to encourage players to conduct themselves like professionals not only on the field but off, starting with the rookie symposium and continuing with player development programs that are available to every player during and after their careers. The NFL?s track record isn?t perfect, but how could any employer be 100 percent sure that none of its employees get into trouble away from work?

Those problems aside, Limbaugh piggybacked on Rivera?s comments. Limbaugh has long criticized what he sees as ties between the NFL and gangs, saying in 2007, ?The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips.? Limbaugh indicated that he thinks it?s unfair that he was criticized for those comments while Rivera will probably get a free pass, but Limbaugh added that he thinks the Hernandez case demonstrates the problem with a gang culture in the NFL.

?This guy is a star player in the National Football League, a star player for the New England Patriots. This has the potential to blow the lid open on the NFL and gangs and the whole concept,? Limbaugh said.

Rivera also decided that he wanted to bring Tim Tebow into the story and compare the two former teammates.

?Ironically a college classmate at the University of Florida of Tim Tebow ? ironic, why? Because Tim Tebow, probably the most religious, straight-shooting ballplayer in the league,? Rivera said. ?And Aaron Hernandez, a kid, an ex-hoodlum. You can take the kid out of the hood you can?t take the hood out of the kid. He was a Bristol Blood, he was a gang banger.?

Unfortunately for Rivera, The Onion beat him to trying to turn the Hernandez story into a Tebow story.

Reeder for iPhone goes free, gets Google Reader alternatives soon

Silvio Rizzi made the iPad and Mac versions of Reeder free to use in the wake of Google's plans to shut down Google Reader, but he left the iPhone app at its usual $3 price -- and its fate in the air. Existing users can now rest easy, as Rizzi has pledged ongoing support for the smaller screen. The current edition of Reeder for iPhone is now free to use, and an already-submitted 3.2 update will bring support for alternative news services like Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler and Fever. Anyone using the iPad and Mac editions will have to be patient, however. Both apps will eventually get the additional news sources, but Rizzi is taking down the existing releases on July 1st to minimize confusion while he works on updates.

Suicide blast near church in Damascus kills 4

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? A suicide attacker blew himself up near one of the main churches in the Syrian capital Thursday, killing at least four people, state-run TV said.

The blast struck in the vicinity of the Greek Orthodox Virgin Mary Church in the predominantly Christian neighborhood of Bab Sharqi in central Damascus, according to state TV. It said several people also were wounded in the explosion, but gave no further details.

A government official told The Associated Press that the suicide attacker was wearing an explosive belt and blew himself up near the church. Both the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, and state TV said at least four people were killed.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in Damascus, which has been hit by a wave of suicide attacks that have killed and wounded scores of people.

Lebanon's Al-Mayadeen TV, which has reporters in Damascus, said the target of the attack appeared to be a nearby post of the National Defense Forces, a paramilitary force fighting against rebels trying to topple President Bashar Assad.

Churches have been targeted in the past, mostly in the central city of Homs and Syria's largest city of Aleppo in the north.

In April, two bishops were kidnapped in northern Syria. They are still missing.

Syria's conflict started with largely peaceful protests against Assad's regime in March 2011 but eventually turned into a civil. Nearly 93,000 people have been killed in the war, according to the United Nations.

Christians are one of the largest religious minorities in the country, composing about 10 percent of Syria's population of 23 million people. They have tried to stay on the sidelines of the conflict, although the opposition's increasingly outspoken Islamism has prompted many to lean toward the regime.

(AP) ? The United States won't be scrambling military jets or engaging in high-level diplomatic bartering to get National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden extradited to the U.S., President Barack Obama said Thursday.

Dismissing him as "a 29-year-old hacker," Obama sought to downplay the international chase for Snowden, lowering the temperature of an issue that has already raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China.

Obama said the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again.

"I'm not going to have one case with a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly be elevated to the point where I've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues, simply to get a guy extradited so he can face the justice system," Obama said at a joint news conference with Senegal's President Macky Sall.

Snowden turned 30 last week. He was working as a government contractor with security clearance when he seized the NSA documents.

Snowden's intercontinental efforts to shirk U.S. authorities ? taking him from a hotel hideout in Hong Kong to an airport transit zone in Moscow, where he's believed to be holed up ? has already undercut Obama's efforts to strengthen ties with China and threatened to worsen tensions with Russia just as Obama is seeking Moscow's cooperation on Syria. At the same time, Snowden's attempts to seek asylum from Ecuador and other nations have underscored Obama's limited sway in a number of foreign capitals.

Obama said he hadn't personally called either Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping to request their cooperation.

"I shouldn't have to," he declared.

Obama said such matters are routinely dealt with at a law-enforcement level, calling Snowden's extradition "not exceptional from a legal perspective." He said the U.S. has a wide-ranging economic relationship with China that shouldn't be dwarfed by the hunt for one fugitive, and that the U.S. has had "useful conversations" with Moscow over efforts to return Snowden to the U.S. Putin has called Snowden a "free man" and refused to turn him over to Washington.

"My continued expectation is that Russia or other countries that have talked about potentially providing Mr. Snowden asylum recognize that they are a part of an international community and they should be abiding by international law," Obama said, noting that the U.S. doesn't have a formal extradition treaty with Russia.

Snowden has acknowledged seizing highly classified documents about U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of U.S. phone and Internet records. He shared the information with The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. He also told the South China Morning Post that the NSA hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal text message data. The Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, has said Snowden still has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents.

"I get why it's a fascinating story," Obama said. "I'm sure there will be a made-for-TV movie somewhere down the line."

The White House has said Hong Kong's refusal to detain Snowden has "unquestionably" hurt U.S. relations with China. After Hong Kong's government claimed it had to allow Snowden to flee because the U.S. got Snowden's middle name wrong in documents requesting his arrest, Obama's Justice Department said the U.S. didn't buy that excuse, calling it "a pretext for not acting."

The Hong Kong government had also previously mentioned that it asked the U.S. for more information on NSA's hacking of targets in Hong Kong, suggesting the issue played some role in its decision.

Obama said the fact Snowden walked off with so many secret documents shows significant vulnerabilities at the NSA that must be solved. But Obama said he's also focused on fostering a "healthy effective debate" about the balance between security and privacy in America.

"In terms of U.S. interests, the damage was done with respect to the initial leaks," Obama said.

Obama's comment came on the first full day of a weeklong, 3-country trip to Africa, his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office more than four years ago.

Race: Huntsmen
They are essentially a purer form of the Hunters, more in touch with there origin from the dragons. They can either be born a Huntsman, or be given the power from a dragon.

Dragons: Dragons are small, winged lizards that are about the size of a forearm. Each dragon controls one element. They generally live to be about 10,000 years old.

Markings: A tattoo of a European style, the winged lizard type, dragon on the forearm, which goes from just after the elbow to just before the wrist. The body and tail of the dragon take up the top of the forearm while the legs and wings extend down his forearm. It is always on the right arm.

Powers: Much like most Hunters and the Resurrected, a Dragons' Huntsman also has a power that requires some dragon blood, which is present in the blood of Hunters and Resurrected, that is not their own. They can sense the souls of the other races as to judge whether they should be hunted or allowed life.

Philosophy: We are the judges of the Hunters and the Resurrected. We help the good and end the evil.

Political state: At war with the Hunters.

History: The Dragons' Huntsmen was created by the almighty dragon council that existed during times that only the Library of Dragons, the hidden storage of all the Dragons' Huntsmen's knowledge, has records of. It is believed that the dragons gave this power to the Huntsmen when the second or third generation of Resurrected began to abuse their ability to come back to life. The Dragon's Huntsmen are the first breed of Hunters to exist, being one of the few that could passed down by family.

As the Resurrected began to grow to greater size, so did the Huntsmen. Both groups lived and balanced in secret for thousands of years. At some point during this time period, all ten of the Hunter's Forges were created, three of which the current Hunters know about and control.

Around 300 years ago, some people who found the secret of both sides of the 'super natural' and wanted that level of power. They created the Dragonless Huntsmen, also known as Hunters, which was a new race of Huntsmen that was less powerful than the Dragons' Huntsmen, but also capable of being made without the aid of a dragon. About 50 years after the original creation, the 'Hunters,' as they deemed themselves, began to hunt Resurrected. No one knows what caused the original war, but since the creation of the war, they have adopted the mission of exterminating the Resurrected.

Hunter's Forge: A Hunter's Forge is a place where metal can be given the property of a Hunter's weapon. 2 recipes exist, each with a different input and result.

  • Hunter's blood plus metal - This creates a durable metal that is capable of killing Resurrecteds once and for all. The metal becomes lighter and more durable than what it was made from.
  • Huntsman's blood plus Resurrected blood plus metal, dragon's blood can be used as a substitute for the bloods - This creates a metal that is severely lighter and stronger than its base, and is often referred to as Dragon's [insert base metal here]. This metal has the blood boiling effect of Hunter's metal, except it works on all three races.

Society: The Dragons' Huntsmen is a group of Huntsmen who act as the judges for the Hunters and the Resurrected. Their culture and religion is based around dragons, as that is who gave them their powers. When someone has been in training for a year, they get their dragon. This dragon acts as their guide, and is always at least 1000 years old before being assigned a human. They believe dragons to be the beasts of creation, and revere them as such.

Dragons' Huntsmen are also very rare compared to the Hunters, but also better trained and more powerful. Where a Hunter, or a Resurrected, is a set above humans in speed and strength, a Dragons' Huntsmen is a step above them. They are often beyond the elite warriors of the Hunters, but far more reclusive and rare.

The trial to officially join the ranks of the Dragons' Huntsmen is call the Dragon's Trial. Through this trial, the initiate is put before 6 dragons who are not bound to a human. They then test the initiate to prove that he has the right amount of purity.

Others: When rating people, Dragons' Huntsmen use 2 terms for people who they believe deserve to live.

  • Pure of Heart - The person has committed a crime, but the crime is justified to the point that the person is still good, or the person feels guilt for the crimes that they have committed.
  • Innocent of mind - Someone who has not committed a level of crime that is recognized by the Dragons' Huntsmen.

Obama clashes with African host over gay rights

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage as a "victory for American democracy" but clashed with his African host over gay rights in a sign of how far the movement has to go internationally.

Obama said recognition of gay unions in the United States should cross state lines and that equal rights should be recognized universally. It was his first chance to expand on his thoughts about the ruling, which was issued Wednesday as he flew to Senegal, one of many African countries that outlaw homosexuality.

Senegalese President Macky Sall rebuffed Obama's call for Africans to give gays equal rights under the law.

"We are still not ready to decriminalize homosexuality," Sall said, while insisting that the country is "very tolerant" and needs more time to digest the issue without pressure. "This does not mean we are homophobic."

Obama said gay rights didn't come up in their private meeting at the presidential palace, a mansion that looks somewhat similar to the White House. But Obama said he wants to send a message to Africans that while he respects differing personal and religious views on the matter, it's important to have nondiscrimination under the law.

"People should be treated equally, and that's a principle that I think applies universally," he said.

A report released Monday by Amnesty International says 38 African countries criminalize homosexuality. In four of those ? Mauritania, northern Nigeria, southern Somalia and Sudan ? the punishment is death. These laws appear to have broad public support. A June 4 Pew Research Center survey found at least nine of 10 respondents in Senegal, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria believe homosexuality should not be accepted by society.

Papi Nbodj, a 19-year-old student who stood by the road to the presidential palace to see Obama's arrival, said homosexuality is against the religious beliefs of most in Senegal.

"We are in a Muslim country, so we certainly cannot have it here," he said. "And for me it's not OK to have this anywhere in the world."

Sall sought to reassure Obama that gays are not persecuted in Senegal. But under Senegalese law, "an improper or unnatural act with a person of the same sex" can be punished by up to five years in prison.

Ndeye Kebe, president of a human rights organization that works with homosexuals called Women's Smile, disputed Sall's contention that gays are not discriminated against.

"I know of around a dozen people who are in prison for homosexuality as we speak," she said. "There wasn't any real proof against them, but they were found guilty and they are in prison."

And as recently as February of 2008, police rounded up men suspected of being homosexual after a Senegalese tabloid published photographs of a clandestine gay wedding in a suburb of Dakar. Gays went into hiding or fled to neighboring countries, but they were pushed out of Gambia by the president's threat of decapitation.

As for Wednesday's court ruling, Obama said he's directing his administration to comb through every federal statute to quickly determine the implications of a decision that gave the nation's legally married gay couples equal federal footing with all other married Americans.

He said he wants to make sure that gay couples who deserve benefits under the ruling get them quickly. Obama said he personally believes that gay couples legally married in one state should retain their benefits if they move to another state that doesn't recognize gay marriage.

"I believe at the root of who we are as a people, as Americans, is the basic precept that we are all equal under the law," he said. "We believe in basic fairness. And what I think yesterday's ruling signifies is one more step towards ensuring that those basic principles apply to everybody."

Obama also offered prayers for former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is gravely ill, ahead of Obama's planned visit to his country this weekend. Obama said he was inspired to become political active by Mandela's example in the anti-apartheid movement of being willing to sacrifice his life for a belief in equal treatment.

"I think he's a hero for the world," Obama said. "And if and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages."

Hundreds awaited Obama behind barricades later at Goree Island on Africa's westernmost point, where Africans were said to be have been shipped off into slavery across the Atlantic Ocean. Obama peered out at the crashing waves through the island's "Door of No Return," at first by himself and later joined by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters. Emerging minutes later, Obama said the site painted a powerful picture of the magnitude of the slave trade as he reflected on the ties many in the U.S. share with the continent.

"For an African-American, an African-American president, to be able to visit this site gives me even greater motivation in terms of human rights around the world," he said.

Obama's focus in Senegal is on the modern-day achievements of the former French colony after half a century of independence. Sall ousted an incumbent who attempted to change the constitution to make it easier for him to be re-elected and pave the way for his son to succeed him. The power grab sparked protests, fueled by hip-hop music and social media, that led to Sall's election.

"Senegal is one of the most stable democracies in Africa and one of the strongest partners that we have in the region," Obama said. "It's moving in the right direction with reforms to deepen democratic institutions."

But such people-powered democratic transitions are not always the story of the African experience. Fighting and human rights abuses limited Obama's options for stops in his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office more than four years ago. Obama is avoiding his father's homeland, Kenya, whose president has been charged with war crimes, and Nigeria, the country with the continent's most dominant economy. Nigeria is enveloped in an Islamist insurgency and military crackdown.

Obama's itinerary in Senegal was designed to send a message, purposefully delivered in a French-speaking, Muslim-majority nation, to other Africans in countries that have not made the strides toward democracy that Senegal has. Obama also met with civil society leaders at the Goree Institute and visited the Supreme Court to speak about the importance of an independent judiciary and the rule of law in Africa's development.

Researchers strike gold with nanotech vaccine

June 25, 2013 ? Scientists in the US have developed a novel vaccination method that uses tiny gold particles to mimic a virus and carry specific proteins to the body's specialist immune cells.

The technique differs from the traditional approach of using dead or inactive viruses as a vaccine and was demonstrated in the lab using a specific protein that sits on the surface of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The results have been published today, 26 June, in IOP Publishing's journal Nanotechnology by a team of researchers from Vanderbilt University.

RSV is the leading viral cause of lower respiration tract infections, causing several hundred thousand deaths and an estimated 65 million infections a year, mainly in children and the elderly.

The detrimental effects of RSV come, in part, from a specific protein, called the F protein, which coats the surface of the virus. The protein enables the virus to enter into the cytoplasm of cells and also causes cells to stick together, making the virus harder to eliminate.

The body's natural defence to RSV is therefore directed at the F protein; however, up until now, researchers have had difficulty creating a vaccine that delivers the F protein to the specialised immune cells in the body. If successful, the F protein could trigger an immune response which the body could 'remember' if a subject became infected with the real virus.

In this study the researchers created exceptionally small gold nanorods, just 21 nanometres wide and 57 nanometres long, which were almost exactly the same shape and size as the virus itself. The gold nanorods were successfully coated with the RSV F proteins and were bonded strongly thanks to the unique physical and chemical properties of the nanorods themselves.

The researchers then tested the ability of the gold nanorods to deliver the F protein to specific immune cells, known as dendritic cells, which were taken from adult blood samples.

Dendritic cells function as processing cells in the immune system, taking the important information from a virus, such as the F protein, and presenting it to cells that can perform an action against them?the T cells are just one example of a cell that can take action.

Once the F protein-coated nanorods were added to a sample of dendritic cells, the researchers analysed the proliferation of T cells as a proxy for an immune response. They found that the protein-coated nanorods caused the T cells to proliferate significantly more compared to non-coated nanorods and just the F protein alone.

Not only did this prove that the coated-nanorods were capable of mimicking the virus and stimulating an immune response, it also showed that they were not toxic to human cells, offering significant safety advantages and increasing their potential as a real-life human vaccine.

Lead author of the study, Professor James Crowe, said: "A vaccine for RSV, which is the major cause of viral pneumonia in children, is sorely needed. This study shows that we have developed methods for putting RSV F protein into exceptionally small particles and presenting it to immune cells in a format that physically mimics the virus. Furthermore, the particles themselves are not infectious."

Due to the versatility of the gold nanorods, Professor Crowe believes that their potential use is not limited to RSV.

"This platform could be used to develop experimental vaccines for virtually any virus, and in fact other larger microbes such as bacteria and fungi.

"The studies we performed showed that the candidate vaccines stimulated human immune cells when they were interacted in the lab. The next steps to testing would be to test whether or not the vaccines work in vivo" Professor Crowe continued.

Stock Futures Point Higher; Synaptics Leaps On ... - Investors.com

Stock futures were higher, but trimming earlier gains ahead of Wednesday's open despite a cutback in first-quarter GDP growth estimates.

Dow futures were ahead 66 points. Nasdaq 100 futures traded up 20.25 points and S&P 500 futures were 9.5 points higher.

The stock market today opens in search of direction, with only mild losses so far this week. The S&P 500, the Nasdaq and the Dow were down 0.3% through Tuesday's close and sitting at the top of the week's trading range. All three indexes are well below their 50-day moving averages and the market remains in a correction.

Mortgage application activity decreased 3% last week, down for a fourth-straight week as interest rates posted their largest one-week increase since 2011, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Refinance applications slowed 5% to the lowest level since November 2011. New purchase applications increased 2%.

Estimates for first-quarter GDP growth were revised lower, to 1.8%, according to the Commerce Department, from a prior estimate of a 2.4% gain. Economists had projected no change for the latest estimate. The GDP price index edged up 1.2%, in line with the 1.1% initial estimate.

Discount store Five Below (FIVE) tumbled 5% in pre-market action after announcing late Thursday it would postpone a secondary stock offering. A company statement cited current capital market conditions. The stock has been fighting to hold support at its 10-week moving average. Shares have been consolidating since March after clearing an IPO base.

Touchpad and computer controller maker Synaptics (SYNA) bolted 13% ahead of the open. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company late Tuesday raised its revenue outlook for the fiscal fourth quarter, which ends this month. The stock has declined for six straight weeks and is well below the 10-week average.

Leading stocks milled about in a narrowly mixed rage. Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) topped the IBD 50 list with a 2% gain. Its four-week pullback stopped short of a test of 10-week support, ending Tuesday 19% above a flat base buy pint of 71.89.
