Sleep duration affects hunger differently in men and women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that adults get could lead to reduced food intake, but the hormonal process differs between men and women.

"Restricting sleep in healthy, normal weight participants has limited effects on metabolic risk factors and may affect food intake regulating hormones differently in men and women," said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, PhD, FAHA, the study's principal investigator. "We were surprised by the lack of a significant effect of sleep on glucose and insulin, leptin, and sex differences in the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone GLP-1."

The study, appearing in the November issue of the journal SLEEP, tracked the sleep duration, glucose dysregulation, and hormonal regulation of appetite in 27 normal weight, 30- to 45-year-old men and women. Participants provided fasting blood draws, and they were studied under two sleep conditions: Short (4 hours) or habitual (9 hours). Short sleep increased total ghrelin levels in men but not women and reduced GLP-1 levels in women but not in men, a sex difference that has not been reported before. The results suggest that the common susceptibility to overeat during short sleep is related to increased appetite in men and reduced feelings of fullness in women.

"Our results point to the complexity of the relationship between sleep duration and energy balance regulation," St-Onge said. "The state of energy balance, whether someone is in a period of weight loss or weight gain, may be critical in the metabolic and hormonal responses to sleep restriction."

According to the authors, this is the largest controlled clinical investigation of the effects of sleep reduction on hormonal regulation of food intake. The results support a causal role of sleep duration on energy intake and weight control.

Getting Wealthy One Decimal Point at a Time - Kung Fu Finance

Bora Bora Paradise

I traveled back from the outstanding Stansberry Alliance conference yesterday and will give you a full report on that next week?it was a great conference and I have lots to share with you!

Today, though, I want to share an essay with you from one of my personal kung fu wealth-building masters, Mark Ford.

Mark is a self-made multi-millionaire and an excellent writer to boot. We share the same ?no-nonsense? approach to wealth-building and I always find his essays insightful, honest, and of course, beautifully written.

I particularly love this essay as it underscores a point I make often here on Kung Fu Finance?that wealth-building and ?getting rich? are certainly possible, but must be achieved one step at a time.

Mark is a true wealth-building master and understands the concept of ?mastery? (vs. the ?buy this one stock and get rich quick!? mentality that tends to permeate the wealth-building industry).

I hope you enjoy his essay as much as I did?please let me know what you think in the comments!

To your financial success,

? Kung Fu Girl

Mark FordGetting Wealthy One Decimal Point at a Time
By Mark Morgan Ford

This essay is only for some of my readers. I?m thinking of readers who want to become really, really rich. Like, billion-dollar rich.

Be warned: If you are in that category, you may be disappointed by what I?m about to say. But you should read it with an open mind. Because what I am going to tell you is the only possible way to increase your wealth in any serious way.

I?ve had the following conversation more times than I would care to remember:

Aspiring Billionaire: I need you to help me.

Me: What can I do?

Aspiring Billionaire: I want to grow rich!

Me: Okay. Have you read any of my books?

Aspiring Billionaire: Yes, but they are about becoming a millionaire. I want to become a billionaire!

Me: You do? That?s interesting. Why?

Aspiring Billionaire: There?s no point in becoming a millionaire any more. It doesn?t cut it. I want to become a billionaire!

Me: That?s too bad.

Aspiring Billionaire: Why do you say that?

Me: For one thing, it?s a very silly goal.

Aspiring Billionaire: Anything the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve!

Me: I can conceive being an NBA player, but I know I can?t achieve it.

Aspiring Billionaire: That?s because you don?t believe it!

Me: You are such a dork. And would you stop ending your sentences in exclamation points?

Aspiring Billionaire: You are making fun of me.

Me: Yes.

The truth is that even if I took these guys seriously, I couldn?t help them. You see, I don?t know how to make billions. And I?m not sure anyone does.

Every year, we read stories about clever young people who create online businesses that they sell for a billion dollars or more. There aren?t many such stories, but they are so dramatic that they seem to be ubiquitous.

When I was starting out, my wealthy role models were early 20th-century industrialists like John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford, and John Paul Getty. These guys became very wealthy by working long and hard for decades, building huge companies that dominated their markets.

They didn?t acquire their fortunes by coming up with a single clever concept and then selling it to a public company for stock.

I consider myself fortunate to have had those people?and not the Mark Cubans of today?as role models. Why? Because the chances of becoming a billionaire this ?new? way is about the same as the chances of becoming a professional sports star. One in a million.

So when people tell me that they are not interested in making millions, what they are really saying is that they are not interested in reality. They want to amuse themselves with highly improbable fantasies about becoming rich.

The truth is this: It takes a lot of effort to become rich. And it takes time.

It took me about four years of concentrated effort to become a millionaire and another seven years to acquire a net worth of $10 million-plus.

But even then, 20 years ago, I still didn?t know how to make millions. I was adding to my wealth in $100,000 increments.

And that experience led me to the following conclusion. If you want to become rich, you must give up the idea of becoming a billionaire. You must start from where you are and gradually learn to make greater sums of money one decimal point at a time.

In 1982, when I first decided to become rich, I was making $35,000 per year. I already had plenty of experience in business, but almost all of my businesses had been service businesses that billed in increments of hundreds or thousands of dollars. As an entrepreneur of such businesses, I could only conceive of and believe in adding to my wealth a few thousand dollars at a time.

If, for example, I wanted to make more money constructing above ground pools, I could (and did) develop an automated procedure for building such pools that any unskilled laborer could follow. This could (and did) allow me to increase the number of construction crews working for me. Each crew could generate $100-150 per day in net profits. That amounted to thousands of extra dollars in profits every week, not millions.

In 1982, I did not have my own business. Having returned several years earlier from a stint in Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer, I was working as an employee of a publishing company. As an employee, I could imagine getting big raises, but since my base salary was only $35,000, I couldn?t imagine how I could increase that sum by more than about 10% per year. Ten percent was $3,500. In other words, I knew how to get richer by thousands of dollars at a time.

After my big decision to become rich, I changed everything about the way I worked for money. I realized very quickly that I would have to do things differently to increase my wealth by more than $1,000 at a time. So I learned to write advertising copy, and I became my boss?s most valuable employee. Several months later, he gave me a raise to $75,000.

So I had learned to increase my wealth by $10,000 increments. What was the next step? To learn how to get richer $100,000 at a time. To do this, I had to become a business owner. I achieved this by inventing a new product and convincing my boss to let me have a 25% stake in it. This new product made more than $200,000 profit in the first several months after I launched it. I had learned how to get rich $100,000 at a time.

I spent the next 10 years learning how to build a serious business. Our business went from $1 million to about $135 million in revenue during that time. But that $135 million didn?t happen in one fell swoop. It was attained over 10 hard-working years, $1 million at a time.

During the following 10 years, I started many other businesses and I invested in real estate. Then my wealth grew by tens of millions, but for the most part they were all increments of million-dollar deals. The main business I worked with grew at $10 million increments, but my compensation was always a smaller portion of that. So I can?t say that my knowledge of getting rich has gone beyond earning $1 million at a time.

By diversifying, I was able to increase my overall income by $3-5 million per year. (Uncle Sam always took his 40%.) That was (and is) a lot of money. I sometimes fantasized about selling our business and making a huge, $10 million-plus killing. But I somehow knew that would have left me in limbo and forced me to start over again. I also realized that I was already earning all I needed to fulfill any need I could possibly have. So I tempered my ambitions. I focused on building sustainable wealth. I diverted my energies into other ambitions such as becoming a writer. Looking back, I believe I made the right choice.

Getting rich $1 million at a time was and is enough for me. And it should be enough for anyone. So that is the main idea I?d like to plant inside your head if you have the billionaire bug.

But even if you aren?t willing to give up that goal, you should still follow the process I have been describing: getting rich one decimal point at a time. You should do that because it is the only practical and reliable way of becoming wealthy. The get-rich-by-selling-your-online-brainchild to the public is a foolish fantasy you should give up now.

You have to learn each step in sequence: first get richer by $1,000, then $10,000, then $100,000, and then $1 million.

If you try to jump ahead, you will quickly crash headlong into your hubris. And I can tell you, that hurts.

So find out where you are and then figure out how to take the next step.

What are the steps?

Step One: If you are a salaried employee, you can increase your wealth by becoming the most valuable employee in your business. This will increase your wealth by tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars?though it may mean switching employers as you go. To find out how to do that, read Chapter 4 from Automatic Wealth. After you have done that, you can move to Step Two.

Step Two: If you are a professional or small business owner earning six figures, you can increase your wealth by a $100,000 at a time by replicating your business somehow. If you?d like to find out more about that, read The Reluctant Entrepreneur.

Step Three: If you have a business that is making millions of dollars per year, you can increase your wealth most effectively by making your business considerably larger than it is. To find out how to do that, read Ready, Fire, Aim.

But here?s something everyone who wants to become rich?millionaire rich or billionaire rich?should do: learn a financially valuable skill.

A financially valuable skill is a skill that you can use to climb the ladder of wealth one step at a time. It is a skill that will put you in the mix whenever the opportunity to acquire wealth appears.

There are not many financially valuable skills. In fact, there are basically only four: marketing, selling, producing profitable ideas, and managing profits.

Learning how to sell is probably the most important because it will allow you to sell both your ideas and also the idea that your ideas are valuable. You will need this skill in just about every possible business situation.

Marketing is also a very important skill. It will allow you to sell your company?s products and services to an ever-expanding market. It will also allow you to generate more income from the customers you have.

Learning how to produce profitable ideas is the most difficult skill to acquire. Many wealth builders never learn this skill. They simply use their sales and marketing skills to convince idea generators to sell them their ideas or work for them. If you don?t feel you have this skill, don?t worry. You can still become wealthy if you have some combination of the other three skills.

The final skill is the skill of managing profits. This is essential for building wealth. Many businesspeople develop businesses that bring in significant revenues. But because they lack the skill to create profits, they never get beyond earning a decent living. They never get rich. The good news is that learning how to manage profits is the easiest skill to acquire. You simply must commit yourself to it and pay attention to your business. The opportunities to increase cash flow and cut costs are always present.

So there you have it: my strategy for becoming as rich as you possibly can. Learn one or several of these financially valuable skills and then learn from them how to increase your wealth one decimal point at a time.

Best,

Mark

Microsoft makes risky bet with Windows 8 release

Microsoft unveiled a radical redesign of its world-dominating Windows operating system Thursday, introducing a touch-enabled interface that attempts to bridge the gap between personal computers and fast-growing mobile devices powered by the company's fiercest competitors.

The debut of Windows 8 heralded the biggest change to the system since 1995, when the company first offered built-in Internet support. And with so much riding on it, the overhaul could be Microsoft's most important product since co-founder Bill Gates won the contract to build an operating system for IBM Corp.'s first personal computer in 1981.

To succeed, the new version will have to be innovative and elegant enough to attract consumers who've fallen in love with notebook computers, tablets and smartphones running software from Apple and Google.

"What you have seen and heard should leave no doubt that Windows 8 will shatter the perceptions about what a PC really is," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer crowed at a New York launching event.

The first PCs and other devices running Windows 8 were to go on sale Friday.

The software is designed for use on a variety of machines ? desktop PCs, notebook computers and tablets, including Microsoft's new Surface tablet, the first computing device the company has manufactured after focusing almost exclusively on software for nearly 30 years.

The redesigned operating system represents an attempt to pull off a difficult balancing act as Microsoft maintains its highly profitable heritage in software while trying to get a foothold in the newer, more fertile field of mobile devices.

So far, the booming mobile device market has been defined and dominated by Apple's trend-setting iPhone and iPad, Google's pervasive Android software and Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets. Tablets have been undercutting the sales of desktop and laptop computers since Apple released its pioneering iPad in 2010.

Another version of Windows 8 will be released next week for smartphones, which are overwhelmingly dominated by Apple Inc. and Google Inc.'s Android software.

Microsoft is also opening a Windows 8 store featuring applications built to run on the system. The store is similar to the apps stores of Apple and Google and will include many of the same services.

About 670 million PCs currently run on Windows. But the owners of most existing Windows machines aren't expected to switch to Windows 8 for at least a year, maybe longer. That means most of Windows 8's early usage will come from consumers, businesses and government agencies that buy new devices with Windows 8 already installed.

There were few surprises because Microsoft Corp. has been previewing preliminary versions of Windows 8 for the past 13 months ? part of 1 billion hours of testing.

Still, the overhaul poses a big risk for the Redmond, Wash., company because Windows 8 looks and operates so much differently than previous versions.

"This is the biggest gamble they've ever made," said analyst Richard Doherty of the Envisioneering Group. "Does (Windows 8) do more things? Yes ... but it's not that easy to use."

Even when users revert to a desktop mode, the redesign discards the familiar "start" button and menu that Windows has had for 17 years, a change that critics believe will almost certainly provoke howls of protest. But many reviewers applaud Microsoft for overhauling Windows so it greets users with a mosaic of tiles displaying applications instead of relying on the desktop icons that served as the welcome mat for years.

In a brief interview Thursday, Ballmer expressed confidence that PC users would quickly realize the mosaic is easier and quicker to use than the old desktop format.

"You've got a whole screen as a start button!" he said.

Windows 8 comes with new controls. It marks the first time Microsoft has made touch-screen control the top priority, though the system can still be navigated with a keyboard and mouse in desktop mode.

"In the case of Windows 8, seeing, touching, clicking and swiping is really believing," Ballmer said. He also predicted the PCs running on Windows 8 will be hailed as the best machines ever made.

Some Windows 8 PCs will be hybrids that look like laptops, but also have detachable display screens containing a separate battery so they can work like tablets, too. Those devices will face direct competition from Microsoft's Surface.

On Thursday, Microsoft also spent time touting the Surface as a more versatile and durable alternative to the iPad, still the most popular tablet on the market.

At one point, a Microsoft executive dropped the Surface on the stage floor to demonstrate how difficult it is to break. In another gimmick, another Microsoft executive stood on a Surface with wheels to show it even had the strength of a skateboard.

The Surface goes on sale Friday, priced at $499 for a Wi-Fi-only tablet with 32 gigabytes of storage. Apple charges the same price for its latest full-size iPad with half the storage capacity. The price for a separate Microsoft "touch cover" that also serves as an attachable keyboard starts at $120.

Apple rolled out its own artillery earlier this week when it showed off a series of improvements to its own laptop and desktop computers and debuted the iPad Mini, a smaller and less expensive take on its top-selling tablet. Google will return fire Monday in New York at an event that it expected to introduce yet another smartphone and a larger version of the company's 7-inch Nexus tablet.

Microsoft's decision to sell its own piece of Windows 8 hardware threatens to alienate the device makers who license its software at the same time many consumers could be expressing their dismay and confusion with the redesigned operating system.

In an attempt to help people grasp and understand the changes, Microsoft is expected to spend an estimated $1 billion promoting Windows 8.

If Windows 8 is a hit, it could also help lift the fortunes of struggling PC makers, including Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., whose stocks have plummeted in recent years amid the rise of mobile computing.

If Windows 8 is a flop, however, it will increase the pressure on Ballmer. Although Microsoft is far larger than when Ballmer became CEO nearly 13 years ago, the company's stock has lost nearly half its value as Apple, Google and Amazon steered computing in a new direction. Restless shareholders could start clamoring for Ballmer's ouster if Windows 8 doesn't shake up the state of the technology market as dramatically as Ballmer envisions.

Microsoft shares fell two cents Thursday to close at $27.88.

Can I get a cash out refinance for home improvements if I have less ...

My husband and I?want to refinance soon.? We bought our home in 2008 for $311,000 and have made several improvements.? Based on similar local sales, I believe it will appraise for around $320,000 now.??We currently owe about $278,000, so?we do not have 20% equity.??We would also like to finish?the basement, which I am estimating will cost about $20-$25k, or possibly less, because we?are willing to?do some of the simpler work ourselves (painting, etc.).??What are?the options?? Can?we do a cash out refinance???We are?already paying PMI, so what are the pros/cons of?cashing out on?a first?mortgage, if we are eligible?? Do any lenders look at the estimated value after improvements for the refinance?? Would we be better off?refinancing the first, then getting a second for the improvements, or would we even qualify for?a loan like this?? (Our credit scores are in the 750 range,?debt ratio is less than 20% with mortgage, and we have 4 and 18 years with current employers.)

In rare show of unity, CEOs call for deficit fix

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chief executives of more than 80 big U.S. corporations, including Goldman Sachs, Cisco Systems and Boeing, joined forces to press Congress to reduce the federal deficit in a rare show of broad corporate unity.

Though the list largely excludes the energy and technology sectors, an omission organizers say they are trying to fix, the U.S. corporate chiefs who did take part said it was urgent to put in place a bipartisan plan to shrink America's debt.

"We are one deal away from fixing the debt and putting our nation back on a stronger economic footing that can restore us to greater job growth," Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said in a statement on Thursday backed by 86 other CEOs.

"If the Congress can commit to a plan outline as early as possible after the election, it will restore business confidence in our economy and investment will follow," he added.

If Congress fails to reach a deficit reduction deal by the end of the year, it will automatically trigger big spending cuts and tax increases in 2013. This so-called "fiscal cliff" would hit the still-recovering U.S. economy hard.

Economic data out Thursday indicated that business investment showed signs of stalling in September, with new orders for nondefense capital goods, excluding aircraft, unchanged in the month.

While it is too early to know how much impact the CEOs could have on the public debate, their unified message might strike a chord with an electorate dismayed by the deeply divided Congress. Only one in five Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, according to the latest Gallup poll.

Congressional sources said the CEO call was unlikely to hurt matters but may not have much influence either.

"I don't think it really changes anything. The business community has never been the stumbling block when it comes to revenues, it's always been the Tea Party. Hopefully it helps, but we'll see," said one senior Senate Democratic aide, speaking on condition of anonymity.

'A POTENTIAL DISASTER'

In a conference call featuring a number of the CEOs, Honeywell boss Dave Cote said Congress should reach an agreement during the "lame-duck" session after the election to come up with a more long-term solution early next year.

Washington observers broadly assume that that is precisely what Congress will do, essentially a "down payment" of some kind during the post-election session to buy time until the presidential inauguration and start of a new Congress.

"From my perspective, there's a potential disaster, or a potential opportunity here," Cote said. "If we go off the fiscal cliff, we could have a recession that in my view is worse than any economist is forecasting today."

The U.S. deficit this year will top $1 trillion for a fourth straight year, pushing the national debt past $16 trillion. While the United States currently borrows at record-low interest rates, investors worry this will change.

President Barack Obama said this week he expected to have a "grand bargain" deficit-reduction deal within six months of starting a second term, a bold prediction that does not seem to have dissuaded the CEOs from pushing harder for a solution.

One element of that solution, which has been anathema to Republicans, is more revenue. While not expressly calling for higher taxes as such, the CEO group is endorsing the principle of a broader tax base that generates higher revenue.

Such an openness to more taxation may seem antithetical, but a growing number of corporate chiefs, including Goldman's Lloyd Blankfein and GE's Jeff Immelt, have said in recent months they were willing to pay that price to solve the problem.

It also stands in some philosophical contrast to business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has described the fiscal cliff as a "Taxmageddon" that would lead to the largest tax increase in history.

'FIX THE DEBT'

The CEOs' statement was organized by a group called "The Campaign to Fix the Debt," which is urging Washington to set aside partisan differences.

The group is essentially a single-issue coalition, comparable to others that have cropped up over the years on other controversies. Its leaders include big-name political and business figures from both parties, and former government officials, among them Robert Zoellick, former president of the World Bank, and Alice Rivlin, former head of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Billionaire investment banker Peter Peterson, who has devoted millions of dollars to raising public awareness of the deficit, has been the major underwriter of the coalition.

Other trade associations and business groups, such as the Business Roundtable and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, are lobbying on the cliff as well. But such existing organizations tend to be constrained by the sometimes conflicting views of dues-paying members and corporations.

The new group came in for immediate criticism from one of the Senate's most outspoken members.

"There really is no shame," said Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, in a statement. "The Wall Street leaders whose recklessness and illegal behavior caused this terrible recession are now lecturing the American people on the need for courage to deal with the nation's finances and deficit crisis."

MORE CEOS

This new campaign is now working on adding more CEOs, particularly in sectors that are not well represented like energy and technology. Some prominent names in those spaces say they have not even been approached.

"We never got a call. We never were invited," said John Roper, spokesman for Houston energy company Apache Corp.

While some doubt how receptive companies like Apache might be to a plan that includes higher taxes, the Silicon Valley high-tech community is expected to be more open to the pitch.

The group said any fiscal plan must be bipartisan, tackle all areas of the budget and include tax reform. It also urged the government to reform and improve the efficiency of healthcare programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

"This is about putting the country back on a path that's sustainable for us and for our children," Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said on the conference call. MacGuineas, known as a key Washington budget player, is thought to add an extra gravitas to the new organization.

The CEO group said recommendations of the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles Commission provided an effective framework for a fiscal plan. The proposal has several options, including trimming tax rates for all income groups.

Simpson-Bowles also calls for slashing many popular tax deductions and adding them back only selectively. Honeywell's Cote, who was a member of that panel, said something like Simpson-Bowles should become a mandatory fallback if Congress cannot reach an agreement on its own soon.

A spokesman for the group said the $30 million raised so far would fund digital, print and TV ads, as well as 20 to 25 state chapters planned nationwide. Chapters are already open in Tennessee and New Hampshire, he said.

The Note's Must-Reads for Thursday October 25, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Carrie Halperin, Jayce Henderson and Danielle Genet

PRESIDENT OBAMA ABC News' Devin Dwyer: " Obama Talks Donald Trump, Tigers With Jay Leno on 'Tonight Show'" President Obama's 48-hour non-stop campaign "extravaganza" took a detour from the battleground states Wednesday for a visit to Los Angeles and the "Tonight Show," where Obama poked fun at his first debate performance and Donald Trump, and hinted that he's rooting for Detroit in baseball's World Series. Hours after Trump unveiled a dud of a potential "bombshell" against Obama - a call on the president to release his college records in exchange for a $5 million donation to charity - Leno asked the president why the media mogul and reality TV star seems to have it out for the president. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Michael A. Memoli: " Obama objects to Mourdock's rape comment, skewers Trump" President Obama told Jay Leno Wednesday night that Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's comments about pregnancy and rape illustrate why men alone should not be making decisions about women's issues. "Rape is rape. It is a crime," Obama told the "Tonight Show" host in an interview set to air this evening, according to an account from a pool reporter traveling with the president. LINK

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: " Obama says Latino vote is key to victory, vows immigration reform in 2013" The Obama campaign's reliance on Hispanic voters in the upcoming election was on full display Wednesday as President Obama dangled the prospect of immigration reform next year, and a top aide predicted that the country's fast-growing number of minority voters will propel the president to a second term over rival Mitt Romney next month. LINK

The Washington Post's Lori Montgomery and Peter Wallsten: " Obama says he'll renew pursuit of 'grand bargain,' offering specifics on agenda" President Obama, criticized as failing to offer a vision for a potential second term, has begun sketching out his agenda with greater specificity in recent days, including a pledge to solve the nation's in?trac?table budget problems within "the first six months." In an interview made public Wednesday, Obama said he would pursue a "grand bargain" with Republicans to tame the national debt and would quickly follow that with a push to overhaul the nation's immigration laws. LINK

Politico's Jennifer Epstein: " Obama counting on ground game" President Barack Obama's campaign is confident that its ground game will produce the winning margin in November - but while they're well ahead of Mitt Romney, things are a lot tougher than they were in 2008. The race is tighter. Enthusiasm is lower. Canvassers face voters disappointed in Obama's first term. Phone bankers find undecideds seriously considering a vote for Mitt Romney. And they're facing competition from a joint Romney-Republican National Committee operation that's deeper and more robust than what John McCain put together four years ago. LINK

Bloomberg's Lisa Lerer and Margaret Talev: " Obama Says Republicans Risk Alienating Hispanic Voters" President Barack Obama said Hispanic voters may make the difference in his re-election chances because his rival Mitt Romney and other Republicans have alienated the nation's biggest minority group with anti- immigrant rhetoric. With 13 days until the presidential election, the two candidates stopped in some of the battleground states that both campaigns say will decide the election. While Obama targeted voting groups he's counting on to win re-election, Romney focused on the slow recovery of the U.S. economy under Obama. LINK

ROMNEY USA Today's Martha T. Moore: " Romney avoids entertainment TV" It has become so standard for presidential candidates to visit all kinds of TV shows to grab the attention of all kinds of voters that as President Obama heads to an MTV forum on Friday, it's more notable who's not going along: Mitt Romney. On Wednesday, Obama visited with Jay Leno on his late-night chat show; last week he sat down with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. LINK

Wall Street Journal's Colleen McCain Nelson and Laura Meckler: " Romney's Calls for Change Prompt an Obama Warning" As Mitt Romney makes his final pitch to voters, he is casting himself as the candidate of change, the only one in the presidential race who can fix Washington. It is an attempt at role reversal, as the Republican presidential nominee tries to own the message that President Barack Obama used effectively in 2008 to persuade voters that he could move the country beyond its partisan stalemate. LINK

The New York Times' Jeff Zeleny and Ashley Parker: " Romney Upbeat, but Math Is the Same" Mitt Romney is savoring the energy surrounding his candidacy, talking with rising confidence about his ability to overtake President Obama in the closing days of the race. He dwells far less on the biggest obstacle facing his campaign: the Electoral College. LINK

The Hill's Jonathan Easley: " Romney gains favorability, Obama wins over women in latest polls" A flurry of new polls shows Mitt Romney eliminating a likeability gap with President Obama, but the incumbent rebuilding an advantage with female voters. LINK

OTHER ABC News' Russell Goldman: " Donald 'Bombshell' Fails to Blow Up" Donald Trump today pledged $5 million to a charity of President Obama's choice, provided the president makes public his college applications and transcripts and releases his passport history, a far cry from the October-surprise bombshell Trump had promised. Calling the offer a "major announcement," Trump released a video via Twitter at noon to much ballyhoo, and his online followers grew by the hundreds in the moments before the video was released. LINK

Wall Street Journal's Monica Langley: " For Clinton as Top Diplomat, Tumultuous Closing Chapter" Just weeks ago, Hillary Clinton was poised to glide out of office as secretary of state with job-approval ratings near 70% and a political buzz suggesting she is already the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate to beat. Then, disaster struck at the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya. LINK

Boston Globe's Glen Johnson: " Winner of popular vote may be denied presidency" The exceptionally close race between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney has once again raised the possibility of a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the White House by falling short in electoral votes. In most recent scenarios, Romney is projected as the victim in this odd quirk of the US voting system. LINK

Over 6,000 nursing jobs cut on Cameron's watch - Reed

23 October 2012

Jamie ReedJamie Reed MP, Labour's Shadow Health Minister, in response to the publication of NHS workforce statistics this morning showing that the number of nurses in the NHS has been cut by 6,191 since May 2010, said:

?Despite his election promises David Cameron has cut the NHS budget two years running and turned it upside down with a wasteful and distracting ?3 billion reorganisation.
?
?Over 6,000 nursing jobs have been cut on Cameron's watch and the cuts are picking up speed, with nearly 700 posts gone in each of the last two months. Patients are paying the price as more people wait longer in A&E and the number of patients left waiting on trolleys in hospital corridors is up by a third.

?What greater sign could there be of a Government that has got its priorities wrong - giving tax breaks to millionaires and P45s to nurses? David Cameron needs to stand up for the right people - patients and staff deserve to be put first. He must stop this assault on the NHS frontline.?

Search is on for lost cat at JFK's Terminal 4

14 hrs.

Remember Jack the Cat?

The former stray made headlines and more than 24,000 Facebook friends?last year after escaping from a pet carrier in Terminal 4 at New York?s John F.?Kennedy International?Airport that was bound for an American Airlines flight to California. Two months later, Jack fell through a ceiling panel in a customs area in JFK?s Terminal 8. But by then he was so ill that, despite extensive veterinary care, he was euthanized 12 days later.

Now another cat has escaped at JFK, and the cat lovers at Where is Jack, Inc. --?the non-profit formed to honor?Jack?s legacy -- are concerned that neither the airline involved,?China Airlines,?nor officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey?are actively searching for the pet or giving her owners adequate information.?

On Thursday, four-year old Xiaohwa (the cat?s name means "little flower" in Chinese) was being checked in for China Airlines Flight 19 to Taiwan by a friend bringing the cat to its owner. But Xiaohwa bolted when the traveler removed her so security officers could inspect the pet carrier.

"We called Terminal 4 to ask people to look around," a China Airlines employee told NBC News after the passenger reported the cat had escaped. "That's all we could do," the spokesperson said, as the passenger didn't have a picture of the animal.

Xiaohwa has been missing since Thursday. Her owner, Iris Yu, says she?s having a hard time finding out what is being done to find her pet.

?I am so worried and wondering where she is,? Yu told NBC News from her home in Taiwan. ?I have been calling the Port?Authority?and the airline every day trying to ask for details about the search, but they just tell me to wait.? Yu moved to Taiwan 10 months ago and paid $120 for a ticket for the cat to travel with her friend as excess baggage. She spent hundreds of?dollars more for documents, health exams and other travel preparations for the cat.

Yu?s boyfriend, Jerry Cheung, lives in Brooklyn and has also been trying to get information about the cat?s whereabouts.??After the incident we were told it?s the airline?s responsibility but the airline?s phone just kept on ringing with no answer for several days,? he said.

The Port Authority told Cheung it would put out some small animal traps with food and "wait it out."

?This is what they did with Jack and it didn?t work,? said Mary Beth Melchior, founder of Where is Jack, Inc., which has offered the airport help for active searches of lost pets. ?Passive searches for lost cats rarely, if ever, result in finding the animal in a timely manner that allows the animal to remain healthy,? she told NBC News.

Although Xiaohwa has a microchip and has a history of being street savvy, she may have already used several of her nine lives. Yu and Chueng adopted the cat after seeing and feeding her for two years on the streets in their neighborhood. They took her in when she was sick and pregnant and nursed her back to health despite a veterinarian?s suggestion that the animal be euthanized.

In September, the Port Authority approved plans for construction of a $32 animal handling facility at JFK that will handle up to 70,000 domestic and wild animals annually and ?set new national airport standards for comprehensive veterinary, kenneling and quarantine services.?

We Eat Less Sugar But Too Much FatYour Health Journal | Your ...

From The Wanganui Chronicle?..

Wanganui residents have cut down their sugar intake but still indulge in high-calorie foods like fish and chips, a community dietitian says.

Pushpa Wati of the Regional Primary Health Organisation, who sees many people who are obese, said residents needed to be more careful about their diets.

?Most obese patients have either developed diabetes or high blood pressure or are about to develop these conditions.

?For some, their children are also obese,? she said.

New Zealand?s obesity rates reached infamous levels last week when the Government beat out its transtasman counterpart to win a Couch Potato Award.

The Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society accolade recognised weak leadership in tackling the obesity epidemic.

About one in three New Zealand adults is overweight and one in four obese, according to a New Zealand Adult Nutrition survey.

Obesity rates have nearly tripled in recent decades. In 1977, only 9 per cent of males and 11 per cent of females were obese.

?In Wanganui, most people are being careful about the amount of sugar they add into their tea or coffee, but they consume a lot more calories through cream, butter, full cream milk, cheese, fried foods [and] fast foods,? Mrs Wati said.

Diabetes New Zealand was not surprised by the Obesity Society award. ?The worst thing [the Government] did ? was they abandoned the rule that had been implemented ? that demanded school tuckshops and canteens only had available healthy food for sale,? president Chris Baty said.

Obesity rates for children aged two to 14 years show one in 12 is obese and one in five is overweight.

Mrs Baty said obesity was often a significant contributing factor in type two diabetes ? a disease the Ministry of Health estimates affects more than 200,000 New Zealanders. ?There?s a massive increase in diabetes. It certainly is linked with the increase in obesity, but it?s not the only reason.

?It?s also to do with our ageing population [and] we know that diabetes has a predisposition within Maori and Pacific Island people.?

The Q-53 Radar Finds Enemy Firing Positions Before Their Mortars Find Us

Fighting wars would be a hell of a lot easier if everybody still just lined up on the field of battle where we can see them. But with the advent of guerilla tactics and asymmetric warfare, you now need to keep your head on a swivel in a vicious cockfight—or just let Lockheed Martin's new mobile radar system watch your back. Clevelanders Can Reserve a Microsoft Surface By Snagging a Reservation Card at Beachwood Place

If you were hoping to snag a new Microsoft Surface tablet on launch day, Friday, and did not pre-order it online, you're still in luck. All Microsoft stores in the United States are handing out Surface reservation cards in limited quantities, and that includes the not-yet-open pop-up shops, including the one at Beachwood Place in Cleveland.

I stopped in at Beachwood Place this afternoon to scope things out. I parked between Dilliard's and Saks Fifth Avenue because I had already looked up the Microsoft Store's location on the mall's website - it's located in the E zone of the mall near Fannie May Chocolates and the escalators that take you up to the second floor. I really had no interest in going anywhere else in the mall, so that was the closest entrance.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but my eagle-eyed three-year-old was the first to spot the kiosk. I had told him we were looking for the Microsoft stand, and he spotted it before me, no doubt attracted by the bright, colorful Microsoft logo. Sadly, it's only a kiosk and not a full-size store, but it's a start. Perhaps if the kiosk is successful, Microsoft will consider opening up a permanent store in the Cleveland area.

There were a few Microsoft employees at the stand when I stopped by, and it looked like they were conducting some kind of training and were getting things ready for launch day later this week. Half of them were sporting black t-shirts with the slogan "I'm a PC".

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was a stack of reservation cards about one-inch thick. Each card is numbered in the bottom right-hand corner. Consumers are allowed to take up to two reservation cards each. I'm guessing that there are somewhere in the range of 100 total. If you want one, just stop by the kiosk and ask one of the helpful employees. They're only giving out a limited number, so get on down there sooner rather than later.

The reservation card guarantees that you will get a Surface on launch day, but there is a catch: you have to get there by 12pm. If you come later, you'll have to get in line and hope there are some left. I like the idea of the reservation cards because then you're not forced to stand in line like a herd of sheep all day ? la Apple product launches. Plus, you're not putting out any money like in a pre-order. When you pick up a reservation card, they do ask which model you're interested in and write it down for tracking purposes, but you're not locked into a decision and can change your mind when you go to pick it up.

We'll be there for the grand opening of the kiosk on Friday, and the launch of the Microsoft Surface tablet, so check back in then for our thoughts on the Surface.

National Space Society + New Mexico Museum Of Space History... Space Advocacy History Preservation... (Event)

[SatNews] The National Space Society (NSS) and the New Mexico Museum of Space History (NMMSH) announced a new partnership...

...for the establishment of a permanent home for historic records chronicling the development of the space activist community and the U.S. space industry. This alliance is the result of four years of discussions and negotiations about the disposition of the Society's archives (which go back as far as the mid-1970's when Wernher von Braun founded the National Space Institute, a predecessor of the NSS) and will officially enable the Museum to begin accepting materials from the Society.

Dale Amon, Chairman of NSS's Archives Committee and a member of the NSS Board of Directors, announced the new partnership at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS). Amon said, "If we do not save our history, it will be rewritten by others. It is up to us, the founders of the Space Movement and dedicated advocates of the space industry, to make sure there is an unambiguous record of how the future came to be and the huge role we played in it."

"It is a rare privilege to have our Museum chosen to conserve and protect the National Space Society Collection. Current and future historians will find that this Collection provides an uncommon insight into the hearts and minds of the activists who founded what is known today as the commercial space industry," said Chris Orwoll, Executive Director of NMMSH. "The Museum's partnership with the National Space Society will ensure that this Collection, reflecting decades of dedication to opening space for all, will be preserved to provide understanding and education for future generations."

New Mexico's Spaceport America, the first commercial spaceport in history, is a major outcome of decades of work by space advocates at the NSS and other like-minded citizens. The Museum project will not only detail that past effort, but document and preserve the evolution of space travel in the exciting years to come.
