How social media can benefit small businesses - Ecademy

The Guardian Small Business Hub's article How social media can benefit small businesses has four simple small business case studies about using social media for business.

They are simple case sudies because they are just broad outlines and because they don't really explain inputs or results (it is only a news article). However it has a neat summary which is a great starting point:

These are four businesses from different sectors, employing different strategies, however there are some basic rules that all businesses should follow if they want results...

? Be selective and focus on the platforms where potential customers are likely to be.

? Be social; don't just announce, engage.

? Be responsive. Establishing a presence on social media is an invitation for people to communicate with you. Ignore them and your efforts will be wasted.

? Be adaptable. Social media is evolving rapidly and businesses must constantly monitor and measure activity and responses and adapt their strategies accordingly.

"Business is all about relationships; be generous, be interested in other people, invest the time and effort, and it will pay off," "

Obama: Congressional leaders may avoid cliff dive

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is urging Congress to reach a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, saying the nation "can't afford a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy."

Obama says in Saturday's radio and Internet address that he believes leaders in Congress may be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses before taxes rise and spending cuts take effect at the end of the year.

He urges "Washington politics" to not get in the way of "America's progress."

In the Republican address, Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt says "inaction shouldn't be an option" and the nation can avoid going over the fiscal cliff if Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate work with Republicans to solve the problem.

neo-neocon ? Blog Archive ? What about gun insurance?

Megan Mcardle mulls over the proposal to make gun owners buy gun liability insurance, and finds it wanting for a host of reasons.

Most of her arguments make sense to me, although I disagree with this particular point of hers:

[Reason] [n]umber one [posited for the proposal, to make gun ownership more expensive], is unfair to advocates of stronger gun control, most of whom say that they do not want to take all guns away from law abiding citizens. I see no reason to doubt them, and so I?m basically discounting any interpretation of this proposal that seems like it would just raise the cost of guns until they were unaffordable for all but the very wealthy.

She sees no reason to doubt them? I see plenty of reasons to doubt a great many of them.

Hawaii lieutenant gov. picked to fill Senate seat

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaii's lieutenant governor and former head of President Obama's 2008 election effort there has been named the state's newest U.S. senator, a choice that went against the dying wish of revered longtime Sen. Daniel Inouye.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Brian Schatz to the post Wednesday, instead of Inouye choice U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.

The 40-year-old Schatz, a former state representative and onetime chairman of the state Democratic party, said his top priorities would be addressing global climate change, preserving federal funds used in Hawaii for things like defense spending and transportation, and getting federal recognition for Native Hawaiians for forming their own government, similar to many Indian tribes.

Schatz, who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The three candidates were selected by state Democrats Wednesday morning from a field of 14. The candidates briefly made their cases before the state party's central committee.

"No one can fill Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's shoes, but what we want to do today is find the right person to walk in his footsteps," Schatz told the committee.

"I want to be your senator because I believe Hawaii needs seniority, and we need someone who can build it up over decades and decades. And I pledge to you, if I'm given this opportunity and obligation to serve, I will try to make this my life's work and rebuild the tenure that Hawaii so desperately needs," he said.

The White House said Schatz would fly to Washington Wednesday night with Obama, who was returning from his Hawaii Christmas vacation early as Congress considers what to do about the so-called fiscal cliff.

Schatz could be sworn in as early as Thursday, which would make him Hawaii's senior senator. Hawaii's other senator, Daniel Akaka, is retiring at the end of this Congress after 22 years.

Even before winning the 2010 general election, Abercrombie expressed faith in Schatz, saying he would put him in charge of attracting more private and federal investment in Hawaii. Other responsibilities included leading the state's clean energy efforts and Asia-Pacific relations.

"To the people of Hawaii, I can assure you this: I will give every fiber of my being to doing a good job for the state of Hawaii," Schatz told a news conference in Honolulu. "We have a long and perhaps difficult road ahead of us, but we can succeed if we work together. I understand the magnitude of this obligation and this honor, and I won't let you down."

Inouye, by far Hawaii's most influential politician and one of the most respected lawmakers in Washington after serving five decades in the Senate, died last week of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He sent Abercrombie a hand-signed letter dated the day he died, saying he would like Hanabusa to succeed him, calling it his "last wish."

Four days after eulogizing Inouye in the courtyard of the Hawaii Capitol, Abercrombie said he had to consider more than just Inouye's wishes in filling his seat.

"Of course Sen. Inouye's views and his wishes were taken into account fully, but the charge of the central committee, and by extension then myself as governor, was to act in the best interests of the party ... the state and the nation," Abercrombie said.

"The law makes explicitly clear, as do the rules of the Democratic Party, that while everyone's voice is heard and everyone's view is taken into account, nonetheless, no one and nothing is preordained."

Under state law, the successor had to come from the same party as the prior incumbent. An Abercrombie spokeswoman said the governor did not feel any political pressure from within his party to make the choice he made.

"While we are very disappointed that it was not honored, it was the governor's decision to make," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's chief of staff, said in a statement. "We wish Brian Schatz the best of luck."

Selecting Hanabusa, 61, would have required a special election in Hawaii's 1st Congressional District. Last time that happened, Hanabusa lost to Republican Charles Djou because of a winner-take-all format that split votes between Democrats.

Abercrombie said the possibility of a special election was a factor, as well as Hanabusa's "key position" on the House Armed Services Committee. The governor said she was on her way toward establishing a senior position on that panel, and it's important for Hawaii ? with its four-member delegation ? to establish seniority in both chambers.

Schatz will serve until an election is held in 2014. He said he will run for re-election to try to keep the Senate seat until 2016 ? the end of Inouye's original term ? and would run again for Senate in 2016 if given the chance.

Hanabusa congratulated Schatz in a statement.

"Having served as chair of the Hawaii Senate Judiciary Committee when the succession law was passed, I fully respect the process and the governor's right to appoint a successor," she said.

Last week, when Abercrombie announced he would not seek the seat himself, his spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said Abercrombie intends to make his current post as Hawaii governor the last office of his political career.

Inouye would be "very happy" with the choice, Hawaii Democratic Party chairman Dante Carpenter said. Schatz has less experience than some older politicians in the Senate but he will be building seniority, which is "critical" to the state of Hawaii, he said.

"In the words of Sen. Dan Inouye ? invoked more than once ? seniority in the United States Congress is everything," Carpenter said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had urged Abercrombie to name Inouye's successor before the end of the year. The next Congress begins Jan. 3.

Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, was elected in November to succeed Akaka.

First in line to replace Schatz as lieutenant governor is Senate President Shan Tsutsui, who said he planned to discuss the prospect with his family before deciding.

Book Review : BOOK REVIEW: Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks

Review by Allison Bohac

By Oliver Sacks

Web edition: December 27, 2012
Print edition: January 12, 2013; Vol.183 #1 (p. 30)

Just before a migraine, New York Times blogger Siri Hustvedt had an amiable encounter with a tiny pink man and an equally tiny pink ox. The odd pair wandered around her bedroom a bit before vanishing. ?I have often wished they would return,? she writes, ?but they never have.?

Hustvedt?s story is just one of the case studies that Sacks, a neurologist, recounts in this charmingly bizarre compilation of strange sensory experiences. Hallucinations tend to be viewed as a sign of an unsound mind (SN: 4/7/12, p. 22). Far more often, Sacks contends, the causes are mundane: migraine auras, fevers, injuries, grief, drugs ? prescription and otherwise ? and even falling asleep or waking up. Seeing, hearing, smelling or feeling things that aren?t there, he says, is a normal part of the human condition.

Sacks uses first person accounts to explore how the brain builds perception from sensory information, and what can happen when that process breaks down. In one tale, an exhausted cyclist mistakes a motor home for a UFO during a long-distance race. In another, a microbiologist infected with the nerve-damaging herpes simplex virus catches the phantom whiff of a fishy odor for an entire year. A musician taking medication for Parkinson?s disease attempts to play musical scores on his piano before hallucinatory notes skitter off the page.

Sacks? writing can be on the dry side, but this works to his advantage here. When the human brain can conjure miniature pink oxen out of thin air, a little clinical language helps keep things grounded in reality.?

Your Complete New Year's Eve Party Look | Lucille Roberts Health ...

With December drawing to a close, everyone is now in preparation for the last event of the holiday season: New Year?s Eve! Ringing in the new year is always associated with parties, dressing up, and lots of glitz and glam.

If you need some inspiration on how to complete your New Year?s Eve party look, don?t worry!?Follow this guide for a glam makeup look, a chic hairstyle tutorial, and some ideas for that perfect party dress. You?ll end 2012, and ring in 2013 with a look that?s sure to get a midnight kiss!

Step 1:? Makeup

For a simple, yet glamorous look, try a winged eyeliner look this New Year?s Eve. This makeup style looks great on every eye shape, and gives off that ?old hollywood? vibe that works great with a bold colored lip.

It can be tricky to work with liquid eyeliner, but with this tutorial from LaurenConrad.com and a little practice, you?ll be a pro at applying a winged eye look.

?If this is still a little difficult to master, use some tape to accomplish the same look:

1. Apply tape to the corner of your eye, aligning it from the corner of your eye to your brow.

2. Apply eyeliner to the edge of your top lid, and out to the corner against the tape to create the ?wing?. Feel free to apply the liner onto the tape (it?s coming off anyway!).

3. Peel away the tape to reveal a perfect winged eye look!

**Top off your makeup look with a bold lip color and gloss?to look ultra-chic!**

?

Step 2: Hair

Lately it seems that everyone is rocking the Sock Bun. This hairstyle, which indeed uses a sock, is perfect for keeping hair tame and out of your face?while looking super-chic! All you?ll need is a pair of socks to create this glam updo.

First you?ll need to create the ?sock? part of your sock bun:

1-2. Go through your drawers and find an old pair of socks. If you have thicker or longer hair, maybe you?ll want to use a pair of men?s socks since they tend to be bulkier and thicker than women?s socks.

3. Begin by rolling down the top portion of the sock as tight as possible.

4. Continue tightly rolling down past the foot portion of the sock.

5. When you?ve finished rolling down the sock completely, cut the toe part off.

6. Congrats! You have now created the necessary tool for a perfect sock bun!

New Year's Eve Party Look, sock bun

http://thebeautytutor.com

Now for the fun part, styling your bun!

1. Tie your hair back into a tight ponytail. The placement of the ponytail/bun is all up to you!

2. Take your newly repurposed sock and put it at the end of your hair, pulling the strands through the hole in the center.

3. Then, starting in the front, smooth you hair over the sock doughnut, tucking the ends of your hair underneath it. Try to disperse the hair evenly around the doughnut.

4. Slowly, roll the sock down your ponytail, tucking in your hair around the sock as you roll.

5. When you get to the base of your ponytail, secure the bun with bobby pins and tuck in any loose strands. You?re done!

?

Step 3: The Dress

Okay, so you probably have a dress already picked out for your New Year?s Eve celebrations. But if you haven?t, here?s some inspiration for?the perfect little number to wear at the start of 2013. Nothing says ?New Year?s Eve? like jewel tones, lace, glitter, and sequins. Or perhaps go with Pantone?s 2013 color of the year: Emerald!

PST: Injury sees Dempsey miss out again for Spurs

Last week it took us by surprised, but after getting word of his injury, concern about Clint Dempsey?s exclusion from Tottenham?s team against Stoke proved much ado about nothing. Whereas the first reaction from U.S. Men?s National Team fans was one of concern, word of ?Deuce?s? groin injury help assuage worries the USMNT linchpin was losing time with his club.

But over the Christmas holiday we heard very little about his (or anybody?s) fitness, so when the U.S. international was again excluded from Andr? Villas-Boas?s team for today?s match at Villa Park, there were renewed concerns. Only this time, the concerns were accompanied by a bit of conspiracy.

Where?s Clint Dempsey? And why don?t we know more about his status?

Today against Aston Villa, Villas-Boas has selected the same four players who started at forward and wide midfield in Spurs? 0-0 weekend draw with Stoke. Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe were up top. Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon wide.

And just under an hour into today?s match, the results have been much the same. That Tottenham has continued to struggle without Dempsey will provide some solace for Deuce?s biggest supporters, even if Defoe?s broken through near the hour.

MORE: Wayne Rooney set to miss three weeks for Manchester United

Still, all this fretting exaggerates the influence of Dempsey?s injury. While it?s true that the former Cottager may see slightly less time in a fully healthy Spurs team, he?s not going to be forgotten. Villas-Boas clearly values Dempsey?s contributions, which is why the American was not only immediately inserted into Spurs? starting XI after his arrival but also maintained his place during his early season adaptation.

And paranoia about his injury status may also go too far. Given the nature of groin injuries, if Dempsey was hurt on Saturday, it?s not unreasonable that he?d continue to have problems today. It?s only been three days.

Until we hear more, there?s no reason to think Dempsey?s fitness is a serious concern. Nor is there reason to think he?s fallen out of favor at White Hart Lane.

Some cancer docs say their income tied to treatments

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A survey of cancer doctors finds that some believe they get paid more when they administer their patients' chemotherapy and other drugs, raising concerns about conflict of interest and the potential for overtreatment.

Researchers found that oncologists, surgeons and other cancer specialists who get paid based on the number of services they provide were seven times more likely to say their pay increases when they oversee their patients' chemotherapy treatments, compared to doctors who are paid a flat rate or salary.

"I think there is evidence out there that doctors are very responsive to financial incentives... So I think some patients should realize that doctors who are prescribing chemotherapy may be benefiting financially," said Dr. Nancy Keating from Boston's Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital, the study's senior author.

According to Keating and her colleagues, who published their study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology on Wednesday, some cancer doctors offer chemotherapy and other therapies in their offices.

Indeed, the researchers note, previous studies have found that as much as 65 percent of an oncologist office's income typically comes from administering treatments. The rest comes from evaluating and managing patients' cancers.

There are some advantages to patients in getting treatments at their doctors' offices, such as not having to travel to a hospital, but some observers worry the practice gives doctors incentive to prescribe more chemotherapy or more expensive drugs because they'll make more money.

In the last decade, the U.S. government tried to reduce the profit margin doctors were able to make by administering chemotherapy to their patients, but Keating told Reuters Health that didn't solve the problem.

"I think there is some evidence out there that doctors just started prescribing more profitable drugs. So this is still an issue," she said.

While the study could not determine whether patients received any unnecessary treatments, the researchers wanted to see whether doctors believe their pay is tied to their ability to give patients chemotherapy.

The researchers used a survey from 2005 through mid-2007 of 480 oncologists, who treated patients from across the country.

Overall, most participants said their income would be unaffected by prescribing chemotherapy or other drugs, or by referring patients to other specialists or hospices.

But 27 percent of the doctors said their pay would increase based on how much chemotherapy they administered and 25 percent said they'd get paid more if they administered more growth factors, such as so-called hormonal drugs, that regulate cell growth.

Doctors who were in some way paid based on how many services they provide - known as fee for service - were about seven times more likely to say their incomes would increase if they administered more chemotherapy or growth factors, compared to doctors who got a flat salary.

Doctors who had their own practices or were part of a smaller oncology group were about nine times more likely to say their income would increase if they administered their patients' chemotherapy, compared to those who worked in a hospital.

"It really is pretty substantial differences. And often, I don't think people pay that much attention to where their doctor works, but I think it does make a difference," Keating said.

But Dr. Yu-Ning Wong of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia cautions that the new study only looks at whether the doctors believed their pay would increase if they could administer chemotherapy or other treatments.

"It didn't say it actually did," said Wong, who wrote a commentary accompanying the study.

She also told Reuters Health that she would not want cancer patients thinking they are receiving unnecessary care or treatments based on this study.

Still, Keating and her fellow researchers say, there needs to be a new way to pay doctors "to counter or eliminate these incentives to decrease unnecessary care and ensure that health care resources are used most effectively."

Until then, Keating said patients should feel free to ask doctors whether they'll benefit financially from their treatments.

"It's certainly something I would want to know," she said. "But I agree it's not an easy thing to ask, but I do think it's something to be aware of and I think it's a fair question to ask."

Lloyd's of London insurers eye $375 million Sandy hit

LONDON (Reuters) - Three of the Lloyd's of London insurance market's leading players owned up to a combined loss of about $375 million from superstorm Sandy and warned the final bill could change.

Bermuda-based insurer Catlin , operator of Lloyd's biggest syndicate, is set to absorb about $200 million in claims from Sandy, it said on Tuesday. Rivals Hiscox and Novae put their exposure at 90 million pounds ($145.79 million) and between $25 million and $30 million respectively.

Sandy, a 1,000-mile wide storm that killed 132 as it swept through the north-eastern United States on October 29, is expected to cost insurers up to $25 billion, making it the second-costliest storm after hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Insurers and analysts have said the size of the affected region, which includes New York and other densely populated and industrialized areas, makes the final damage bill difficult to calculate.

"This estimate is subject to a considerable degree of uncertainty due to the size of the storm system, and the wide variety of damage it caused," Catlin said.

Sandy came at the end of a relatively uneventful year for natural catastrophes, in contrast with 2011, the insurance industry's second-costliest on record after earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand generated a claims bill of over $100 billion.

The comparative absence of big disaster claims during the first nine months of 2012 means the insurance industry is still expected to turn a profit for the year as a whole.

"We expect Sandy will have turned what would have been a very benign catastrophe year and a very strong earnings year back into a relatively average one," Joy Ferneyhough, an analyst at Espirito Santo bank in London, wrote in a note.

Catlin shares were down 3 percent by 4:45 a.m. ET against a 0.3 percent rise in the mid-cap FTSE 250 <.ftmc> share index, partly surrendering a 21 percent gain since the start of the year. Hiscox and Novae were 0.8 percent lower and 1.9 percent higher respectively.

Top U.S. insurers AIG and Allstate have estimated their Sandy losses at $1.3 billion and $1 billion respectively, while Swiss Re , the world's No.2 reinsurer, has said it expects to pay out $900 million.

The Lloyd's of London market, a collection of about 80 competing insurance syndicates that sell protection against natural catastrophe and other risks worldwide, has not yet said how much Sandy will cost it collectively.

Lloyd's which traces its origins back 324 years to a London coffee house where merchants met to insure ships, has historically borne about 10 percent of the claims burden from major natural disasters, analysts say.

Lloyd's insurer Beazley expects to take a $90 million hit from Sandy, it said on Friday.

Red Jersey to facilitate Eye Gotta Feelin in RGOA Members Trophy Race at Romford

Standing in the first stall, Eye Gotta Feelin is all set to make a huge impact in RGOA Members Trophy Race, to be held at Romford on Wednesday, December 19th. The draw is a massive plus for the black dog. He will be having a great opportunity to take an early advantage and, if he makes a good move in the beginning, his chances for the first prize will be as clear as day.

J. Reynolds? charge performed magnificently on his previous venture. After starting the race from the second box, he picked up good early pace to put the rest under tremendous pressure. The dashing hound railed nicely afterwards, and established his dominance at the second bend.

He maintained the standards until the end, and eventually scored by 2? lengths. Having taken such a comprehensive win, the 3-year-old is full of power, and could easily notch up the first place. Among his rivals are:

Jaytee Huzzar, Droopys Sally, Hoof It, Alis Dawn, and Redhot Poker. The 400 metres contest is scheduled to begin at 21:41 GMT. The Grade A2 meeting carries a handy prize of 116 pounds.

Droopys Sally is another big player. After being trounced twice in the trials, the black bitch raised her game to seal a comfortable win last time around. In an A4 meeting, the daughter of College Causeway impressed everyone by showing a splendid performance, taking the top prize by five lengths. She is making a huge step up in class, but still makes good appeal.

Jaytee Huzzar, on the other hand, is stepping down in grade. After facing embarrassment twice at the top levels, the blue and brindle dog is desperate for success. Stepping down to this company might help him regain momentum. But it is hard to trust him blindly.

Alis Dawn is struggling for form these days. Similar is the case with Redhot Poker, who was fifth on his previous venture. Hoof It is standing in the sixth trap, looking to go wide and avoid a nudge from the neighbour. This is the only thing going in his favour. Good luck to all the contestants.

Egyptian rivals: Constitution appears to be passing

Polling station officials count ballots in Cairo on Friday at the end of the first day of vote in a referendum on a new constitution.

By Reuters

CAIRO - Egyptians appeared to have voted narrowly in favor of a constitution shaped by Islamists, officials in rival camps said on Sunday after the first round of a two-stage referendum. The result based on unofficial tallies, if confirmed for this round and repeated in Saturday's second stage, may give Islamist President Mohamed Morsi limited cause for celebration as it shows the wide rift in Egypt at a time when he needs to build consensus on tough measures to heal a fragile economy. Official results are not expected till after the next round. Morsi and his backers say the constitution is vital to move Egypt's democratic transition forward. Opponents say the basic law is too Islamist and tramples on minority rights, including those of Christians who make up 10 percent of the population.
The build-up to Saturday's vote was marred by deadly protests. Demonstrations erupted last month when Morsi awarded himself sweeping powers and then fast-tracked the constitution through an assembly dominated by his Islamist allies. The vote passed off peacefully with long queues forming in Cairo and other cities and towns where this round of voting was held. The vote was staggered because many judges needed to oversee polling staged a boycott to voice their opposition. But late on Saturday, as polls were closing, Islamists attacked the offices of the liberal opposition Wafd party newspaper, a party that was part of the National Salvation Front coalition that pushed for a "no" vote. "The referendum was 56.5 percent for the 'yes' vote," a senior official in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party operations room set up to monitor voting told Reuters.

ANALYSIS: Egypt is rapidly approaching its own 'cliff'

The Brotherhood and its party, which propelled Morsi to power in a June election, had representatives at almost all polling stations across the 10 areas, including Cairo, where this round of voting was held. The official, who asked not to be identified, said the tally was based on counts from more than 99 percent of polling stations in this round. 'Very close'
One opposition official also said the vote appeared to have gone in favor of Islamists who backed the constitution, after the opposition had previously said late on Saturday when voting ended that their exit polls indicated the "no" camp would win. Another opposition official had suggested as counting proceeded through the night that the vote would be "very close." Even a narrow loss could hearten leftists, socialists, Christians and more liberal-minded Muslims who make up the disparate opposition camp, which has been beaten in two elections since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown last year. They were drawn together to oppose what they saw as Morsi's power grab and his constitution push. Their National Salvation Front includes prominent figures such as Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohamed ElBaradei, former Arab League chief Amr Moussa and firebrand leftist Hamdeen Sabahy.

'Men don't have to worry about being caught': Sex mobs target Egypt's women

If the constitution is approved, a parliamentary election will follow early next year. Opposition leaders say the Front could help unite the opposition for that poll after their divided ranks have split the vote in previous elections. But analysts questions whether the group in this form will survive to a parliamentary election. The Islamist-dominated lower house of parliament elected earlier this year was dissolved based on a court order in June. Violence in Cairo and other cities has plagued the run-up to the referendum. At least eight people were killed when rival camps clashed during demonstrations outside the presidential palace earlier this month. Several party buildings belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood's party have been burned by angry protesters. 'Move on'
On Friday, a day before the vote, rival factions armed with clubs, knives and swords fought in the streets of Alexandria. Opposition supporters trapped a Muslim preacher inside his mosque after he called for a "yes" vote. "The sheikhs (preachers) told us to say 'yes' and I have read the constitution and I liked it," said Adel Imam, 53, as he queued to vote in Cairo on Saturday. "The country will move on." Echoing the views of many Christians, Michael Nour, a 45-year-old Christian teacher in Alexandria, said: "I voted 'no' to the constitution out of patriotic duty. The constitution does not represent all Egyptians." In order to pass, the constitution must be approved by more than 50 percent of voters who cast ballots. A little more than half of Egypt's electorate of 51 million were eligible to vote in the first round.

ANALYSIS: Egypt's military maintains watchful eye on politics

Rights groups reported some abuses, such as polling stations opening late, officials telling people to vote "yes," bribery and intimidation. But Gamal Eid, head of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, which is monitoring the vote, said nothing reported so far was serious enough to invalidate the referendum. Islamists have been counting on their disciplined ranks of supporters and the many Egyptians desperate for an end to turmoil that has hammered the economy. Howaida Abdel Azeem, a post office employee, said: "I said 'yes' because I want the destruction the country is living through to be over and the crisis to pass." If the constitution is voted down, a new assembly will have to be formed to draft a revised version, a process that could take up to nine months. The army has deployed about 120,000 troops and 6,000 tanks and armored vehicles to protect polling stations and other government buildings. While the military backed Mubarak and his predecessors, it has not intervened in the present crisis.

Sandy Hook shooting: Obama vows to use power of presidency to thwart massacres

At a prayer service in Newtown, Conn., Sunday night, President Obama?said he would gather law enforcement and mental health officials to address the kind of unfathomable gun violence that struck Sandy Hook Elementary School. 'We can't tolerate this anymore,' he said.

Coming after what Mr. Obama has said was his most difficult day in office when a gunman on Friday killed 20 first graders and six school professionals in this quiet, close-knit New England town, the promise rang out as perhaps the boldest of his presidency as he vowed to head up a national soul-searching effort likely to involve examination of school security, mental health policy, and gun laws.

"We can't accept events like this as routine," Obama said after an emotional interfaith vigil. "Are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage, that politics are too hard, are we prepared to say that such violence visited upon our children year after year is the price of our freedom?"

When tragedy strikes: a prayerful response to the shootings in Connecticut

The vigil marked the fourth time Obama has mourned victims of mass shootings. They include shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, Tucson, Arizona, and, earlier this year, Aurora, Colorado. Obama painted a picture of a country grieving for innocent children, first responders who came upon a horrific scene, and the parents and relatives left behind.

After meeting with victims' families and police and firefighters who rushed into the school only to be met by the deadly results of unspeakable mayhem, Obama spoke for about 20 minutes at a packed Newtown High School. In meeting places and taverns around the town applause rang out after an unusual speech that meshed Bible verses, remembrances of children and teachers, with an almost angry resolve that left those watching in stunned silence, followed by applause and a standing ovation. "We love you, Barry," one woman at a local tavern called out.

On Friday, a 20-year-old Newtown local, Adam Lanza, killed his mother, then drove five miles to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he forced his way in and entered two classrooms close to the entrance, firing rapid fusillades into groups of first graders and their teachers. Twelve girls, eight boys, and six female staff, including the principal, died. Police say Lanza then turned a gun on himself as police arrived.

The sheer brutality of the lingering question ? why? ? caused a close-knit community to recede into churches, homes, and crisis centers on Sunday to grieve and seek understanding. "No media" signs were everywhere. Meanwhile, hundreds of people ventured into the town to place teddy bears into a line of Christmas trees and place flowers on makeshift memorials that burned into the night.

"I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depth of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts," Obama said. "I can only hope it helps for you to know that you're not alone in your grief, that our world, too, has been torn apart, that all across this land of ours we have wept with you ? and we've pulled our children tight. As these difficult days have unfolded, you've also inspired us with stories of strength and resolve and sacrifice. That is how we will remember Newtown."

Connecticut town seeks solace in church; Obama due

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Worshippers filled Sunday services to mourn the victims of a gunman's elementary school rampage that killed 20 children and six adults with President Barack Obama due to appear later at an interfaith vigil to help this shattered Connecticut town recover.

Twenty-year-old gunman Adam Lanza shot his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Friday morning, firing away at students at staff with the civilian version of a powerful military rifle. Victims were hit multiple times and at least one was shot 11 times, authorities said.

All the dead children were either 6 or 7 years old, feeding more emotion into a revived debate about whether stricter gun laws could prevent future mass shootings in the United States.

"If this doesn't shake the consciousness of the country about doing better to protect our children, I don't know what will," said Pedro Segarra, mayor of Hartford, the state capital.

A light mix of snow and freezing rain greeted worshippers on a cold and gray morning, church parking lots filled with cars. On Saturday, Jews gathered at Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown to express their disbelief at the massacre and show support for the survivors.

Obama was scheduled to attend an interfaith vigil with the families of the victims starting at 7 p.m. EST (0000 GMT).

At the Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, early Mass was packed. The priest's announcements at the end included news that the Christmas pageant rehearsal would go on as planned, but without 6-year-old Olivia Engel, killed on Friday before she could play the role of an angel.

Makeshift memorials that began appearing in the hours after the shooting continued to grow on Sunday and new ones kept emerging in this affluent town of 27,000 people surrounded by wooded hills about 80 miles from New York City.

The largest memorial, festooned with flowers and teddy bears, sat at the end of Dickenson Drive where Sandy Hook Elementary stands, and residents and visitors streamed past a police roadblock to add to it.

At the memorial, a woman knelt down and sobbed violently.

As the children walked down the street in the rain, carrying their toys and signs, a man sat on the back on his parked car playing a mournful tune on a violin to accompany them.

Further up the street, an American "Flag of Honor" hung with the names of the dead. Poinsettias, roses and lilies lay beneath it, alongside candles and stuffed animals.

"This is a time to come together," said Carina Bandhaver, 43, who lives in nearby Southbury.

The children who survived will not have to return to the scene of the massacre when school reopens later this week and instead will attend classes at an unused school in a neighboring Connecticut town about 7 miles, school officials said. Classes elsewhere in the town would resume Tuesday, except at Sandy Hook.

GUN DEBATE

Connecticut's Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy on Sunday became the latest public figure to call for new gun control measures. "These are assault weapons. You don't hunt deer with these things," Malloy said on the CNN's "State of the Union."

Gun rights advocates have countered that Connecticut already has among the strictest gun laws in the nation.

Obama's appearance will be watched closely for clues as to what he meant when he called for "meaningful action" to prevent such tragedies.

The president arrives after authorities released the names of the dead on Saturday and more details emerged about the victims and the rampage itself.

After killing his mother, Nancy Lanza, at home, Adam Lanza shot his way into the school and started firing at the children, most if not all with a powerful rifle - a military-style Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine - at close range. He also killed six adult women at the school and himself, putting the death toll at 28.

Malloy, referring to the shooter, said: "We know that he was a troubled individual, and that he went to school with a number of weapons which he used on his victims and ultimately used on himself. ... I'm sure we'll come to know more about him and his problems and his family."

Lanza had struggled at times to fit into the community and his mother Nancy pulled him out of school for several years, to home-school him, said Louise Tambascio, the owner of My Place Restaurant, where his mother was a long-time patron.

His father, Peter Lanza, issued a statement saying the family was in a "state of disbelief."

"We too are asking why," the statement said.

Nancy Lanza legally owned a Sig Sauer and a Glock, both handguns commonly used by police in addition to the long gun, according to law enforcement officials.

U.S. lawmakers have not approved a major new gun law since 1994, and they let a ban on certain semiautomatic rifles known as assault weapons expire in 2004. Malloy lamented that the assault ban was allowed to lapse. He also said a lot of guns used in crimes in his state were actually purchased in other states and brought to Connecticut.

Though Americans have seen many mass shootings over the years, the victims have rarely been so young. An appalled and grieving nation learned more about the dead.

Emilie Parker, another of the child victims, was studying Portuguese with her father, Robbie Parker, who opened up about his daughter in an emotional news conference in which he turned both glowing and teary.

"This world is a better place because she has been in it," Parker said.

Vicki Leigh Soto, 27, saved her first-grade students' lives by putting herself between the kids and the gunman. Britain's Independent on Sunday newspaper splashed her photo on its front page with the caption "The Heroine of Sandy Hook."
