Verizon fixes yet another data outage

By Rosa Golijan

Verizon Wireless

Updated at 6 p.m. PT

On Wednesday, Verizon Wireless customers had to deal with yet another data outage. Like previous technical glitches, the outage was resolved within a day's time and Verizon tweeted an obligatory line about things being back to normal.

At the time of the outage, Verizon's own support forums were filled with complaints from customers who had trouble with both 3G and 4G data service.

When asked about the issue though, a Verizon spokesperson said that the company was "investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4G LTE network" and that "the network itself continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services." The spokesperson said that "3G devices are operating normally."

This statement gave us a case of d?j? vu.?On Dec. 21, Verizon customers faced a similar outage and the company's response was nearly identical:?4G issues were resolved, but 3G connectivity was said to have never affected. Prior to that, another outage occurred on Dec. 6.

Twitter

We're not certain why Verizon denied any 3G-related network difficulties vehemently and repeatedly?? despite a steady stream of customer reports of the contrary?? but we have reached out to the company for comment. We will update once we receive a response.

In the meantime, we're simply glad that the complaints about both 3G and 4G difficulties do seem to have quieted down. Hopefully the third fix will have been the charm for Verizon.

Update: Late Thursday, Verizon issued a lengthy statement about the 4G service outage, although it gave no explanation for the cause. Each of the three outages this month have "been different from a technical standpoint," the company said. "Our engineers have successfully diagnosed those past triggering events, and they have not re-occurred."

The "recent issues that affected our customers? 4G ... service were unforeseen despite careful, diligent planning, deployment and ongoing upgrade programs."

As to customer complaints that 3G service was also affected, Verizon said, "Our 3G and 1X networks continue to reliably process calls, texts and data for customers with 3G devices ... It continues to perform at the high level that established it as the nation?s largest and most reliable 3G network."

The company did say that "for brief periods, such as on Wednesday ... 4GLTE customers could not connect to the 3G Network as quickly as we would have liked."

Verizon says it is taking "a number of steps, working closely with our network suppliers, to ensure the integrity of our 4GLTE Network. We continue to fortify and improve its performance, and our goal is that our 4GLTE Network meets the same high standards that our 3G Network has set for performance and reliability.

"Among the numerous measures we have taken or will take are: geographic segmentation, which enables us to isolate, contain and rectify network performance issues, and maintain service to the majority of customers when an issue does develop; and software fixes that we have developed, tested and applied regularly?? and will continue to do so. Both will improve performance and reliability."

Sterling baseball team wins Legion title

STERLING --There were four teams that brought home state titles over the course of the year. And one of them was in the summer. The Sterling B Legion team hosted the state tournament on the Northeastern Junior College campus and put together great win after great win to take the title.

It was a fun moment. The fact that it occurred after the end of the regular high school baseball season did not lessen its significance at all. In fact, in many ways it made it seem more important. It was a long season. And while every team is close, there is something to be said for the summer baseball players who play for so long and so hard and through all the hot weather.

Coach Josh Wilson, the assistant coach on the Sterling high school baseball team, pulled the full potential out of his players. That was important as the team was whittled at throughout the tournament due to injuries and other obligations.

One of the biggest losses was Luke Engelhaupt, who injured his ankle sliding into second.

Freshmen stepped in and showed up big with Ty Lucero and and James Skerjanec both contributing in the final game.

Chaz Myers threw one of the best games he had in his high school career to give his team the edge. He wasn't the only Tiger who stood out from the pack. Brendan Diaz was named as the most valuable hitter, hitting a .643 on the tournament. But the MVP went to catcher Wyatt Nelson, who fought off the heat fatigue that normally plagues others at his position as the temperatures climbed above 100 and had a 1.000 fielding percentage. He also hit over .500 on the tournament.

All in all, the heat, the sweat and grime, the sheer length of the tournament, was worth it as the team brought home the title.

On a personal note, it was the first major event that I was out to cover after the birth of my son. Still very sleep deprived, the team, the coaches, and the parents all stepped up and gave me a lot of help to make sure I could get the best coverage out of the event that I could. Not just on the Sterling side either. Fleming was still in the mix up until the end and they helped in equal portion.

Presidential buzz surrounds leading figure of Russia's protest movement

Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Putin and leader in Russia's protest movement, could pose a tough threat to his presidential bid.

Russian blogger-cum-folk-hero Alexei Navalny, who is already being discussed as a potential contender to challenge Vladimir Putin in upcoming presidential polls, was released from a Moscow prison Wednesday to the wild cheers of supporters.

Mr. Navalny, whose trenchant and well-documented attacks on Kremlin corruption?have migrated from the Internet to the streets in recent weeks, was arrested and sentenced to 15 days in prison after he took part in an unsanctioned rally to protest alleged vote-rigging in Russia's Dec. 4 parliamentary election.

"These 15 days have taught me not to be afraid. I am not alone. We are the majority," he told a jubilant crowd of supporters.?"I was imprisoned in one country and am being released into another," he added.

He pledged "extraordinary efforts" to build momentum in the protest movement, which saw at least 30,000 mostly young and middle class demonstrators rally on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square on Dec. 10 to demand that the allegedly fraud-tainted elections be cancelled and re-staged under fair rules and conditions.

The next rally is set for this Saturday in Moscow, and well over 30,000 people have already signed a Facebook-based pledge to attend. Russian authorities have permitted the rally, but given?covert police actions aimed at discrediting leaders and splitting the movement, they may be extremely worried that the protests could become a real threat to Kremlin dominance.

Navalny is the author of the term "party of rogues and thieves" to describe Mr. Putin's ruling United Russia party (UR), a phrase that went viral in Russia and may have contributed as much as any other factor to UR's massive loss of support in the election.

Even with what critics estimate as up to 20 percent fraudulent boost in its vote tally, UR barely managed to eke out a 50 percent victory in the polls.

After the New Year break, Russia will launch into presidential polls that will see Putin face off against handful of drearily familiar, lackluster opponents, including Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky and liberal Yabloko chief Grigory Yavlinsky ? most of whom?have been defeated repeatedly in set-piece elections by Putin.?

A new contender is tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov,?who announced his candidacy last week in the wake of the massive Moscow protest. But few think Mr. Prokhorov, a superwealthy "oligarch" who gained his fortune through murky wheeling-and-dealing in the wild 1990s, can attract any votes beyond Russia's narrow business and emerging professional elites.

Many experts say Navalny, with his street cred and reputation as a democratic nationalist, could be the candidate to appeal beyond the confines of downtown Moscow and pose a genuine challenge in Putin's vast provincial and working class base ? if he were allowed to run.

"I think Navalny is the leader of the future," says Konstantin Bakulev, director of the independent Institute of Socio-Economic Modernization in Moscow. "He has all the right things going for him: he's a new face, not linked to any of the old-line political parties, and he's really trending right now. People say he's a nationalist, but he's really a patriot. If he proves he can work with people, he will go places."

Upon his release Wednesday morning, Navalny fueled speculation about a possible presidential run by aiming a sharp rhetorical barb at Putin personally.

"The party of rogues and thieves is putting forward its chief rogue and its top thief to run for the presidency," Navalny said. "We must vote against him, struggle against him."

Missing Ind. girl found dead, babysitter charged (AP)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. ? A missing 9-year-old Indiana girl has been found dead, and the neighbor who was watching her before she disappeared was arrested on a murder charge Monday night, authorities said.

The body of Aliahna Lemmon was found in northeast Indiana's Allen County, where her family lived in a mobile home park, but investigators aren't saying where the remains were found, sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said.

Mike Plumadore, who told local media that Aliahna went missing sometime Friday as he watched her and her sisters, was taken into custody late Monday after being interviewed by police, Tinkel said. He said the 39-year-old was facing a murder charge.

"He was a trusted family friend," Aliahna's step-grandfather, David Story, told The Associated Press late Monday, saying he was surprised by Plumadore's arrest.

Plumadore is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

FBI agents earlier Monday descended on the rundown mobile home park in Fort Wayne where Aliahna lived and was last seen. It's a known haven for registered sex offenders, though Plumadore is not on Indiana's registered sex offenders list. He has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault.

More than 100 emergency workers searched for Aliahna around the mobile home park Saturday, though no active search was done Sunday. Tinkel said the same size search could not be sustained because of the Christmas holiday.

Elizabeth Watkins, who lives nearby, said residents of the mobile home park keep to themselves and she didn't know Plumadore. According to a state website, 15 registered sex offenders live in the park that numbers about two dozen homes, and Watkins said that makes people cautious and reserved.

"I'm numb, I'm totally numb," she said when told about the girl's death. "I don't know what to think."

Aliahna's mother, Tarah Souders, told The Journal Gazette earlier Monday that her daughter had vision and hearing problems and suffered from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems. Aliahna and her sisters were staying with Plumadore because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna's stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day.

Plumadore told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store's surveillance video shows him there about that time.

"I had dead-bolted the door," he said. "When I got back, all the girls was here."

He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna's mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna's 6-year-old sisters told him Aliahna had left with her mother.

Plumadore said it wasn't until he talked with Aliahna's mother about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified.

Tarah Souders said the miscommunication caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.

"She's never wandered off," Souders said earlier Monday.

'Four out of five' bottles of Italian olive oil debased

The fraud has been uncovered by an investigation involving the Italian customs service and police from the Guardia di Finanza, or fraud squad, with the encouragement of Coldiretti, one of the country's biggest agricultural organisations.

The con is being perpetrated by what amounted to an "agro-mafia" of dishonest producers and manufacturers, Coldiretti said.

"It involves 13 of the biggest olive oil producers ? there are some very famous names," Stefano Masini, the organisation's spokesman, said.

"We asked the authorities to intensify their checks in this sector and the investigation is only just beginning. It's going to be a long battle but it is essential because people need to be able to know the difference between genuine, top quality Italian oil and everything else."

The fraud was being organised by a "cartel" of importing and distributing companies, Mr Masini said, most of them operating in central and southern Italy.

Coldiretti has waged an aggressive campaign to crack down on food products that are fraudulently identified as Italian, often encased in packaging emblazoned with the red, white and green of the national flag.

In the past its target has largely been foreign-made food and drink, such as 'mozzarella' made in the United States, 'pecorino' sheep's cheese produced in China and 'prosciutto' ham originating from Eastern Europe.

But Italians are also active in misrepresenting their own food and drink, passing off mozzarella made from cow's milk as genuine buffalo mozzarella and adding low-quality grapes to some of the country's most famous red wines.

Author Name: Lucy

I am currently in my 2nd year studying Sports Development, Physical Education and Inclusion. The student halls accomodation across the city I can not fault, it is lovely, well cared for and the staff who work within them are very helpful and welcoming, although it is very expensive (?92-160 per week). The campus itself is rather dated on the outside but inside is full of technology, it is in the lovely countryside although the local residents arent very welcoming of students. The course itself is very up and down, some modules are excellent and you cannot fault them, however for every good one there is one which is very pointless and no relevant (as far as myself and others can see/understand). The lecturers are up and down as well, some are really really good and very helpful, provide support for studies and home life, although on the other hand there are others that have the attitude you are grown up enough to look after yourself and can cope by yourself, but the ones who do care are happy to help. University provide an extensive support team at all the campus' which is a great support for anyone as they deal with a variety of issues and point you in the right direction if they cannot help themselves. LJMU offer a wide variety of societies and clubs, some are very cheap and accessable but others are rather expensive (a lot more than if you joined a local club). LJMU do offer some good job opportunites but only after you have finished your degree (WOW certificates and Graduate skills, as well as gradute job days). Also a lot of sports kit is very expensive and so are the books especially as they know you are students (the uni's answer is to use your student loan that is what it is there for! Most dont understand student loan doesn't cover your accomodation!) I would reccomend this uni if you are a very independent student and cope with little study support and enjoy nightlife.

Summary: It is okay as long as you are made of money!

The Large Hadron Collider Has Been Recreated In Lego

[unable to retrieve full-text content]An anonymous reader writes "The Large Hadron Collider has many fans, and one of its biggest is Sasha Mehlhase, a physicist from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen. Mehlhase has decided to help promote the LHC to students by taking the time to recreate a 1:50 scale model of it using Lego bricks. In total he spent 81 hours creating it, which was split between 48 hours of designing the model on his laptop, and a further 33 hours putting it together."

Another Soyuz rocket launch fails

Russia's recent poor launch record has continued with yet another Soyuz rocket failure.

This time, a Soyuz-2 vehicle failed to put a communications satellite into orbit after lifting away from the country's Plesetsk spaceport.

Debris is said to have re-entered the Earth's atmosphere near the western Siberian town of Tobolsk.

In August, a Soyuz failure on a mission to resupply the space station led to a six-week suspension of flights.

Friday's rocket was carrying a Meridian-5 satellite, designed to provide communication between ships, planes and coastal stations on the ground, according to RIA Novosti.

It was a Soyuz-2.1b, the most modern version of the rocket that has been in service in various forms since the 1960s.

The failure is said to have occurred seven minutes into the flight. Sources being quoted by the Russian media talk of an anomaly in the rocket's third stage.

"The satellite failed to go into its orbit. A state commission will investigate the causes of the accident," the spokesman of Russia's space forces, Alexei Zolotukhin, was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

August's botched launch involved a Soyuz-U. An inquiry into that incident eventually traced the problem to a blocked fuel line, again in the third stage of the vehicle. But the U and 2.1b Soyuz variants use different engines in this segment of the rocket, so no immediate parallels between the two incidents can be drawn.

Friday's failure now puts a major question mark against the next Soyuz launch, scheduled for 28 December from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This flight is intended to put in orbit six satellites for the Globalstar satellite phone company.

And it will raise concern again among the partners on the International Space Station (ISS) that there may be systemic problems in the Russian launch sector.

Following the retirement of the American space shuttle in July, the Soyuz rocket is the only means of getting astronauts and cosmonauts to the ISS. August's failure saw manned flights stand down even longer than the six weeks for unmanned Soyuz rockets, and the hiatus put a severe strain on the operation of the space station.

Russia has experienced a number of launch mishaps in the past 13 months.

On 18 August, the week before the loss of the space station mission, a Proton vehicle failed to put a communications satellite in its proper orbit.

Back on 1 February, a Rokot launch also underperformed with a similar outcome.

And on 5 December last year, a Proton carrying three navigation spacecraft fell into the Pacific Ocean. This particular failure is widely believed to have contributed to the decision of the Russian government to replace the then space agency chief, Anatoly Perminov.

Vladimir Popovkin took over as the head of Roscosmos in April.

The rocket failures come on top of the loss of Phobos-Grunt, Russia's most ambitious planetary mission in decades. It became stuck in Earth orbit after its launch in November and will probably fall back to Earth next month.

In defence of the French ? Telegraph Blogs

Allez Les Bleus.

If you comb through the French blogosphere and the comment threads of Le Figaro and Le Monde, you will be struck by how many posters are disgusted with their own government for lobbing a hand-grenade across the Channel.

Hatred of Britain is not much in evidence. On the contrary.

Enough has already been said about the conduct of the Governor of the Banque de France, and about the young man who ? for mystifying reasons ? is now French finance minister.

I will only add that Mr Noyer is very confused if he thinks that Britain should be downgraded because of its higher inflation rate. The rating agencies evaluate default risk consisting of contractual non-payment.

Countries that pursue stealth default through inflation devalue the real burden of their debt and therefore reduce the risk of technical default. This is well understood by the markets. They actually improve their rating potential ? so long as they don't push their luck and go
too far.

(The looming danger in Europe is in any case deflation. The EMU money supply is contracting. That really does raise default risk.)

The deeper point is that Britain has the shock absorber of its own central bank, acting as lender of last resort.

In other words, there is an implicit rating discount on EMU membership. Neither Noyer or Baroin, or Fillon for that matter, seem to understand this. Perhaps they cannot do so, given what it implies about the nature of monetary union.

Sterling has been able to take the strain for the UK instead of the debt market. This has been the side-effect of a 20pc devaluation (or is it now 15pc as sterling claws back?).

British household debt (100pc of GDP) is much higher than in France (52pc), but most of that is mortgage debt in a market with a chronic shortage of housing. The debt is mostly structural.

Britain and France: comparable debt bubbles

All in all, I would say that French and British debt burdens and public finances are just about as bad as each other.

What is striking is that most French readers commenting in the French press have exactly the same view.

Indeed, this brazen affair may ultimately come back to haunt President Sarkozy.

We should have no quarrel the gallant French nation, only with its current leader and with its Enarque elites.

3 Yemeni officers killed in southern city (AP)

SANAA, Yemen ? Yemeni security officials say three military officers, including two from a renegade unit, were killed by unknown assailants in the southern city of Taiz.

Friday's attack came days after the vice president announced a security plan calling for militia and military units to withdraw from the streets in an attempt to restore order after months of protests seeking President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ouster.

The security officials said the slain officers from the renegade unit were shot in the center of Taiz. The other officer was shot in his car in a separate incident. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

Telrault Negotiates Agreement Between BCE and Rogers ...

Monday at 5:30 pm, McCarthy Telrault advised Bell Canada parent company BCE, and Torys represented Rogers Communications, in negotiating the shareholders agreement between the two companies the led to Bell and Rogers jointly acquiring the 75 percent stake in MLSE.

Two of Canada?s largest telecommunications companies aim to score a big chuck of money from the company that owns the NHL?s Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA?s Toronto Raptors.

On Friday, Bell Canada and Rogers Communications announced that they will team up to try and pay roughly $1.3 billion to acquire a 75 percent stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) from the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP).

MLSE owns both of the Maple Leafs and the Raptors, as well as the Air Canada Centre arena where both teams play their home games. The company, in addition to the arena, owns Major League Soccer team the Toronto RC, the minor league hockey team the Toronto Marlies, and the three digital television channels. Rogers already owns the Major League Baseball?s Toronto Blue Jays, and the stadium that the team plays in, the Rogers Centre.

In November, the OTPP said that it had planned to hold on to its MLSE stake. According to the pension plan?s own announcement, the pension plan had changed its course after being approached with the unsolicited bid from Montreal-based bell and Toronto-based Rogers.

The OTPP currently holds a 79.53 percent stake in the MLSE, with Canadian businessman Lawrence Tanenbaum owning the remaining shares through his holding company, Kilmer Sports. Tanenbaum has announced that he will aquire the OTTP shares that are not going to Bell and Rogers, which will give him a 25 percent stake in MLSE. He will remain with the company until the transaction, but details about what is going on there were not disclosed.

Blake, Cassels & Graydon are all serving as the deal counsel to both Bell and to Rogers in connection with the MLSE acquisition. The firm?s new team includes M&A partners Shlomi Feiner and Jeffery Lloyd, corporate partners Graham Smith and David Kruse, and the real estate partner Thomas Von Hahn.

Blake Cassels is also taking over as Bell?s competition as banking counsel. The banking partners Michael Harquail and Simon Finch are advising on that side of the transaction, along with competition partners Brain Facey, Julie Soloway, and Micah Wood.

Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg is serving as competition counsel for Rogers, with a group that includes partners George Addy and Mark Katz.

Meanwhile, OTPP turned to Stikeman Elliott to advise on the sale. The firm?s M&A team includes the partners Jeffery Singer, William Braithwaite, and Michael Burkett, and they are joined by their tax partner John Lorito and communications partner Gregory Kane. The counsel members, Lawson Hunter and Shawn Neylan are advising on competition issues.

In its increasing MLSE stake, Kilmer turned to Toronto-based Goodmans corporate partners Dale Lastman, David Matlow, and Michael Patridge.

The transactions, which are subject to approval by the regulators and the teams? respective leagues, are expected to be closed in the middle of 2012.

?TUF 14? title means Diego Brandao can fight with peace of mind and give his Brazilian mother a new life

?TUF 14? title means Diego Brandao can fight with peace of mind and give his Brazilian mother a new life

Diego Brandao was fighting with a lot on his mind on Saturday night. The 24-year-old Brazilian knew a win at the Season 14 "Ultimate Fighter Finale" could change his mother's life.

Brandao scored a comeback victory of sorts with a surprising armbar to grab the TUF 14 featherweight title and guaranteed contract with the UFC.? He also earned an extra $80,000 for Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night. Now he can take care of his 43-year-old mother back in his hometown Manaus.

"My mission is over. I've been here for three years trying to get a better life for my family," Brandao said during the TUF 14 postfight press conference. "She doesn't know what's going on now. I hope she doesn't have a heart attack. I'm going to go slow (in telling her)."

Brandao said his mother rents a one room apartment and that she often has no food to eat. He will offer a chance to move to the U.S. with him or buy her a house in Manaus. To make ends meet, she cleans houses. Brandao wants to free her from that.

Training out of Albuquerque's Jackson's MMA, Brandao said the UFC contract and extra money will help his career too.

"I'm going to take care of myself from here. I'm going to be a better fighter too," Brandao said. "Sometimes when I've been training I've been thinking of (what's going on back in) Brazil, about the food problem down there. Now I'm going to be focused."

Brandao looks like a great prospect at featherweight. His overall record is a deceiving 14-7. He fought 11 times before the age of 21. With improved stamina and game-planning under the coaching of Greg Jackson, the kid has a chance to be a big star. He hits like a Mack truck.
